Mother’s Day inspiration: 3 elevated brunch cocktails for spring

Ernest Hemingway once wrote that “Paris is a moveable feast.” I think he might have meant “transportable,” because a moveable feast changes dates but not location, whereas a transportable feast goes wherever you do. But what do I know? Holidays, like Easter or Passover, that move around the calendar are known as “moveable feasts.” But I would argue that any occasion that kicks off brunch season — whether it’s Mother’s Day or the first sunny Sunday after months of rain — is the ultimate moveable feast. Adding a whole egg adds richness to a Ramos Fizz. (Ross Taylor/The Virginian-Pilot) And brunc ..read more

Column: AI moviemaking software ‘so easy an alien could do it.’ But where do visual effects go from here?

By 2023, artificial intelligence had seeped into enough corners of a nervous film industry — buoyed by Barbenheimer, but fully aware of an imminent 2024 shortage of new titles — to become a seriously effective tool of labor unrest. Last year’s Screen Actors Guild contract, achieved after a lengthy, costly staring contest with industry producers and streamer honchos, added some guardrails designed to protect actors’ collective livelihood, noting “the importance of human performance in motion pictures and (AI’s) potential impact on employment.” Tye Sheridan knows about that impact. He’s an actor ..read more

By GRAHAM DUNBAR and EDDIE PELLS (AP Sports Writers) The names have been trickling in, one or two at a time. Over the next two months, that trickle will turn into a flood. By the time the festivities begin in Paris on July 26, some 10,500 athletes from more than 200 countries will be able to call themselves 2024 Olympians. From archery to wrestling, each of the 32 sports on the Olympic program has different qualifying criteria. Some athletes have been racking up wins, or points, over the past year and already have secured their spots. Many more — for instance, more than 85% of the spots on the ..read more

Robert Lloyd | Los Angeles Times (TNS) “Based on a true story” — why do we care? Does it matter whether the events of a dramatic work “really happened,” or sort of happened, more or less in the way we’re being told? Is it a come-on to prurient interests, when the subject is dark or sensational? Is it to appear educational? Is it to advertise that things that seem too incredible to be true really are true, to make what’s shocking even more shocking, or to prop up a story that can’t stand on its own? If I had a definite answer for you, there wouldn’t have been so many question marks in the prece ..read more

‘The Jinx – Part Two’ review: A filmmaker continues his investigation into accused killer Robert Durst
Florida Sun-Sentinel | South Florida entertainment, events, and things to do
by Nina Metz

When it premiered on HBO a decade ago, the true crime docuseries “The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst” stood out mainly because of Durst’s willingness to appear on camera. The wealthy New York real estate heir was suspected of killing three people: His first wife Kathleen McCormack in 1982; his close friend Susan Berman in 2000; and an elderly Texas neighbor Morris Black in 2001. At the time, he had only stood trial for the murder of Black (whom he also dismembered) and was acquitted. Surprisingly, Durst agreed to be interviewed by filmmaker Andrew Jarecki about all of it. Perhaps Du ..read more
