Written by Amanda Goebel – During daily pick-up and drop-offs at her daughter’s elementary school in Phoenix, Arizona, Jazmin L.’s six-year-old noticed something peculiar about her mom’s vehicle. She asked why their car didn’t have exhaust coming out of a pipe like everyone else’s did. The answer was simple for Jazmin, a researcher who works for the City of Phoenix. “It’s because our car is different because it doesn’t need gas,” Jazmin told her daughter. “The burn- off gas that comes out of cars isn’t good for you. Our car is cleaner and healthier for you.” Now, Jazmin’s daughter covers her f ..read more

Understanding Demand Charges

Similar to other types of infrastructure, like highways, the electric power system is built to meet maximum demand. While a five-lane beltway may be nearly empty at four in the morning, all of those lanes are definitely being used during rush hour. Transmission operators and distribution utilities do the same thing. They build out the electric system capacity to meet maximum demand so that when everyone is running air conditioning and appliances at the same time, there is adequate electricity and infrastructure to keep the lights on. Electricity use is not level. Depending on the time of day a ..read more

The shift to electric vehicles is a tremendous win for air quality, public health, energy security, jobs, and the planet. Electrifying transportation is critical to addressing the climate crisis and cutting tailpipe emissions, both of which disproportionately harm Indigenous, Black, and other communities of color. As we transition to a clean energy economy, we must update mining laws to maximize the benefits of transportation electrification while protecting communities and the environment. The mining industry has a well-documented history of social and environmental degradation that must be a ..read more

As regular drivers, you’ve all seen signs along the highway pointing you to gas stations, food, and lodging. Now, you’ll be able to locate EV charging stations in the same way, using highway signage. Recently, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) updated the national manual on what kind of signage can be added along highways across the country. Notably, the new signage helps to ensure that EV drivers and EV-interested consumers are easily able to locate charging stations the same way that gas vehicle drivers can. With EVs growing in popularity, the new signage will help to raise awarenes ..read more

Making the switch to an all-electric vehicle takes a bit of a leap of faith. Many of us had our first electric vehicle experience with cheap radio-controlled toys that ran on a couple of D batteries before quickly growing wobbly and unresponsive.  Those of us who have made the leap of faith to modern electric vehicles (EVs) have learned that there are many benefits. Aside from costing less to fuel, being much easier to maintain, having zero emissions, and being super fun to drive, we have discovered that, unlike the batteries in our old radio-controlled toys, EV batteries are pretty amazi ..read more

Imagine a transportation option that has the fun and flexibility of a bike, is a fraction of the price of a car, can park almost anywhere for free, and produces almost zero climate-changing emissions. Sounds too good to be true, right? Think again. Meet the e-bike.     A battery and small electric-assist motor on a bike frame allows riders to climb hills and reach higher speeds with each boosted pedal for less effort than a regular bike. E-bikes can reach speeds of up to 28 mph and can go 20 -100 miles on a single charge. The US Department of Energy confirms that around 50 ..read more

By Zan Dubin-Scott I’m standing on the sidewalk in the sun, proudly gazing at 70-plus vehicles lined up and ready to go for a history-making event–the world’s first electric vehicle parade–when my phone rings. A group of us early adopters had organized the procession, reaching out to every EV owner we knew within spitting distance of L.A. This was 2009, a full year before the first mainstream mass-produced EVs had hit the road, so we mostly had Toyota RAV4 EVs. Little else had been delivered in any significant number.  It didn’t matter. We knew we were doing something downright groundbrea ..read more

It means that when you purchase an eligible electric vehicle (EV) or Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) and if you meet the income requirements, you get the FULL amount of the tax credit up front. So depending on the vehicle, you could get $3,750, $4,000 or $7,500 off of the purchase price. This money can even be used as a down payment on the veh ..read more

Setting New Standards for Clean Cars

A normal vehicle releases several tons of pollutants each year, which depends on the vehicle’s fuel, fuel economy, and how far it is driven annually. Improving vehicle technology and electric vehicles saves consumers money through reduced maintenance and fuel costs and improves air quality and public health. To continue unlocking these benefits for communities by advancing vehicle technology, the U.S. federal government has worked on two programs in particular: EPA’s Light Duty Vehicle Emissions (LDV) Standards and NHTSA’s Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) Standards.  So what are thes ..read more
