Toning Cyanotypes

Did you know that Cyanotype prints don't always have to be blue? They can be toned and even bleached to alter their colour. The key is to use anything with a high tannin content. Tannins are commonly found in the bark of trees, leaves, buds, stems, fruits, seeds, roots, and plant galls. For this process, you could use tea of different varieties, red wine and even make your own tannin solutions using vegetable peelings and flowers from your garden! Toning is a great way of adding depth, evoking a specific mood, enhancing details, or complementing the subject matter of the image. My name is Angela Hall, I’m an artist and silkscreen printer based in North Yorkshire, and I have been making and selling my limited-edition prints for the last 5 years from my studio, specialised print events and regional galleries.   My creative journey started with a degree in Graphic Design from Bath Academy of Art in the 1980’s, then progressed into working within the design and print industry, before a career change working within community arts in South East London. A move up north to North Yorkshire and a big cultural change saw me working with rural communities and establish ..read more

Using Pearl Ex Metallic Pigments to Enhance Linocuts
Handprinted
by Holly Newnham

Pearl Ex Powdered Pigments are metallic pigments that can be mixed into printing inks, acrylics, oils, encaustics and loads more. As printmakers we were keen to see how they could be used in various printmaking applications, starting with linocut.    We began by mixing Apple Green Pearl Ex into Caligo Extender (which is colourless). We found we needed to use quite a lot of Pearl Ex to build up a colour strong enough for a print (twice the quantity in the above photo to achieve the ink in the below photo). However, the colour was lovely and it gave a subtle sheen. The pri ..read more

I'm very interested in linking work across several disciplines.    Describe your printmaking practice All my work starts with multiple sketches. I’m an artist and maker from southern Scotland, designing and hand printing bespoke textiles for interiors. My work focuses on the relationship between pattern & place; all of my designs are inspired by a particular location and aim to interpret the story of their surroundings. My curtains are designed and made to commission, and I also print ‘building collage’ cushions inspired by special places which are available to buy or commission individually.   Describe your printmaking process. I screen print all of my fabric by hand, in a process which remains relatively small scale. I use a ..read more

Hi, I’m Ariana - a pattern designer and printmaker from leafy Sheffield. I create joyful patterns and illustrations, which are particularly inspired by 20th century design, and I produce my own range of stationery and homewares.     Describe your printmaking process. Screen printing on paper is my main focus; it suits me as I tend to design using a limited palette of 2 or 3 colours and I love the dense, powdery finish of the inks. Mixing colours is a big part of the process for me - I spent weeks perfecting my ideal cornflower blue! I’m also developing my lino printing practice ..read more
