As many members of the Muay Thai community in Ontario know, in the Summer of 2021 a new Board of Directors came together to help navigate the community through post-pandemic reopening. Being entirely new to leadership of the Muaythai Ontario organization, there was a steep learning curve for all the new Board members. On June 3rd 2023, the Muaythai Ontario Board of Directors met to hold a formal vote on plans that had been months in the making. During this meeting, Kru Yai Alin Hălmăgean stepped down from his position as President of the Board of Directors, and was voted into a new role as Honorary President. At Kru Yai Alin’s and Ajahn Suchart’s proposal, Kru Yai Dylan Benitez was voted in as the new MTO President.  We hope the MTO community will join the Board in thanking Kru Yai Alin for his years of hard work and dedication to both MTO as an organization and to the Muay Thai community as a whole. New Changes For Competing and Coaching With Muaythai Ontario Athletes and coaches are no longer required to upload their medical forms and background screening forms to the website. In accordance to Provincial requirements, and for the safety of our youth and athletes, MuayThai Ontario continues to ensure all concussion protocols are followed in accordance to Rowan’s Law. MTO is happy to appoint Poo Choi Kru Kennedy Benitez as the new Concussion and Safety Officer- Rowan’s Law. Her responsibility will be to help educate, increase awareness and minimize the risk of concussions. In August 2019, Muaythai Ontario worked with Marrissa Mathews of the Omushkegowuk Cree, Eagle and Turtle Clan from Kapuskasing in a bid to establish a Muaythai program at The Indigenous Network (TIN) in Mississauga. This program began a 6-week pilot, and then regular weekly classes with a dedicated group of students. It was a proud moment to see this class come to fruition. After all, it had been one of the programming priorities of Muaythai Ontario President, Kru Jenypher Lanthier. A facility looking to reopen must be a member club of a provincial sport organization (such as Muaythai Ontario) recognized by the Ministry of Heritage, Sport, Tourism and Culture Industries. According to Ontario Regulation 82/20 (as of June 16th, 2020), the only persons permitted to use the facility are athletes who are members of an organization. This would mean that for a member club, all athletes, even those not competing in sanctioned Muaythai Ontario events, must also be registered as members of Muaythai Ontario to use the member club facility. On Friday May 15th, 2020, an email was sent to MTO members regarding the list of Stage 1 openings provided by the Government of Ontario. In the detailed list, close contact individual sports such as martial arts, boxing, squash, racquetball, etc. are not permitted. However, over the long weekend, an amendment to Ontario’s Emergency Order was made and then published on May 19th, 2020.
