Gwulo's talks
On Tuesday next week (26 Mar) I'll give a new talk, using old photos to investigate Hong Kong's military history. The venue is a perfect fit for the topic, as we'll be at the United Services Recreation Club (USRC) in Jordan - the club opened in 1911 to offer recreational facilities to the British armed services. The talk is hosted by the local branch of the Orders & Medals Research Society: you'll find full details of the talk on their website.
If you'd like to attend please click here to contact their Hon. Secretary, Mart ..read more

Meet Delfino NORONHA [1824-1900], one of the leading lights of Hong Kong's Portuguese community in the 19th century. The biography is written by Stuart Braga, Noronha's great-great grandson.
Back in 2014 I posted 110 years of Hong Kong Trams in photos, showing how the appearance of Hong Kong's famous trams had changed since they first started running in 1904. I grouped trams into 'generations', according to the big changes in how they looked.
Ten years have passed, so to celebrate the trams' next big birthday&nb ..read more

It's time for the annual round up of what happened last year. In summary:
A big thank you to all Gwulo's patrons, who make a regular monthly or annual contribution towards the costs of running the Gwulo website (hosting fees, the mailing service that sends out the newsletters, hardware costs, and the time I spend on the site).
You'll see that the number of patrons, and the total monthly contribution, has fallen for the third year in a row. At the same time the costs of running Gwulo steadily increase. If you are a regular reader of Gwulo, please become a patron to keep Gwulo runni ..read more

NB: This is a hand-drawn commercial map and, as described below, its layout isn't always accurate. It is still a good source to see what was in Hong Kong in 1958, but don't rely on it to pinpoint the location of a building, street, etc. - please use one of the government maps for that instead.
I've just finished adding this 1958 copy of Jan Jan's Map of Hong Kong to the maps on Gwulo. You can see it as an overlay by selecting the new '1958 HK' layer on any of Gwulo's maps, or go straight to it by clicking one of the links below:

Patricia Lim's excellent database of the inscriptions on gravestones in the Hong Kong Cemetery includes a few where the stone is so worn that the text can no longer be read. Selkirk has done additional research to identify the person buried in each of those graves (scroll to the bottom of the page).
