There are five principal styles of Taijiquan (or T'ai-Chi Ch'üan), Yang, Wu, Chen, Wu/Hao and Sun. They all emphasize stability, rooting and deep relaxation but have different looks and slightly different martial applications.

There is some evidence that TaiChi may have not have originated from either Yang or Chen family, but from the Daoist thousand year temple in Tang village. Li Chunmao studied in that temple, and developed further the actual system on which all the current TaiChi styles are based.

Both Feng Zhiqiang and Chen Yu have emphasized the "sitting on the stool" aspect within a Chen-style form. Without doing a lot of checking, my impression is that Feng tried harder to exhibit the characteristic in public demonstrations. Chen Yu (again, just my impression) seems to recommend it, but in his videos he tends to move more normally, much of the time. Bear in mind that this "sitting on a stool" aspect is ultimately a copy of what Chen FaKe did.
