Going Off Dialysis - Doctor's Suggestion

So; I'm on Dialysis (4 weeks now, chest catheter, 3 days, for 3 hours each day), and my doctor tells me "hey, if you get better with dialysis; you can get off Dialysis". My thing is, through research; you can't just stop Dialysis once you have started, when you are Stage 5 (end-stage kidney disease). Is it true; that I can get better and not need dialysis; or should I get a second opinion, if my current doctor does take me off dialysis? submitted by /u/Dickey2023 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Dialysis machines

I just found out the nephrologist prescribed my husband to have hemodialysis on a 180 machine. Apparently, though, the center has only been using a 160. Is this something concerning? I’m going to call the center and ask for an explanation but in the meantime thought I’d ask this lovely sub. I understand that the 180 is bigger therefore cleans out more stuff from the blood. But is it a problem that they aren’t doing what was prescribed? submitted by /u/MamaSmAsh5 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Is it possible to sleep on a hand with a closed fistula?

Sorry, English is not my native language. I know that you can't lie on your hand with an arteriovenous fistula, you can't wear a watch on that hand. And how are things after the transplant? In the event that the fistula is closed, can you use your hand as before? submitted by /u/Easy-Journalist7771 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

FOREARM AV FISTULA

Hello! My fistula was created last month and I started dialysis this week. It was created near my wrist. Nurses told me that I should still exercise it with a stress ball so that it would grow bigger because they're having a hard time injecting with mine. As far as I remember, my surgeon told me that they created my fistula far from my heart so that it won't grow like a snake like the others. Does it really grow that big? I'm kinda confused Thanks. submitted by /u/Legitimate_Flan2005 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

I have av graft placed a little over 2 weeks now. my arm is still very swollen I hear and feel the thrill occasionally bit sometimes if I feel it, it's very light. like its not noticeable unless I press lightly and feel light movement. is it supposed to be loud or something? is my swelling making it harder to feel? I dont want to visit my surgeon post op yet because I'm still very swollen and I haven't really worn anything besides the same hospital gown (washed ofc) but I don't wanna slip my arms into anything to go out. any input would be appreciated thank you. submitted by /u/chocopeppermi ..read more

Hello: I recently started hemo dialysis. I am currently receiving it through a chest port. They want me to eventually get an arm fistula. Is that painful process because I do a lot of exercises with my arms. Will I be able to continue on with exercises or will I have to stop to let it heal? How long is the healing process? Thanks so much for any thoughts. submitted by /u/ocean747 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Severe Pedal edema in CAPD, What am I doing wrong?

My dad was started on PD ten days back. He was started on APD machine dialysis and he had no symptoms. The output was good and he was fine. They then started him on Manual CAPD 5 days back and he was doing very fine. But since yesterday evening he developed Severe Pedal edema which has spread to thighs and now he has penile edema as well. He usually gets these symptoms when there is volume overload. I measured the output and the input and we are getting a negative balance. I'm worried. What am I doing wrong? What should I do now? Should I extend the time between the PD cycles? What would be t ..read more

Safe food for hemodialysis

Hi, I'm a caregiver for my partner who has recently started hemodialysis, it was her 6th session yesterday. The first session was pretty hellish with nausea, vomitting for two days, wooziness, super bad bruising on her arm where the fistula was, the works. Through trial and error, we realised we could manage her nausea with small meals and snacks and later on found out that those symptoms were probably because she was going hypo. Also, load up on proteins a little. So we're managing now with small meals, and I pack a little snack bag for her four-hour dialysis sessions. My questions: What's ..read more
