Tipping and Credit Card Service Charges

I'm having a dilemma about tipping on credit cards and the processing fees. As you likely know, each state has different rules on how much an employer can withhold from tips paid on credit cards. Here are some details: Is It Legal for Employers to Deduct Credit Card Processing Fees from Tips? I live in NYC, where employers will withhold credit card processing fees from the wait staff. But I don't want to short the waiter. So, do I: Tip 20% in cash only? Tip 20% on card and let the credit company steal the cut. Tip 20% + 3% processing fee. on a $100 bill, $20.70, so the waiter get their full ..read more

I think good waiters could be air traffic controllers.

If you're they type of bartender/waiter who loves it when it's busy but are able to keep your cool under the pressure, read on. I have a hunch, after many years of being an air traffic controller (ATC) and frequently pondering the question "where can we find people who would be able to qualify as air traffic controllers?", that I may have an idea where that might be: bars and restaurants. Keeping things under control in the restaurant setting, where the priority is keeping your customers happy by not fucking up, is much like being an ATC. We don't care so much about keeping pilots happy, whic ..read more

Tips on remembering drinks? Off the menu.

I have serving experience but my new side gig has a huge alcohol menu to memorize and I’m not really a drinker. I keep studying the menu, but I’m still struggling. Also how long does it take to memorize a menu or how long do people expect you to take? My past serving jobs were set up different than my current one (either served preordered food, I knew the menu because I started off at a different position, or I’m just a runner etc…) and one of my managers is giving me grief that I haven’t memorized everything after 3.5 shifts (got sent home early due to early closure of the building). submit ..read more

Advice needed please

Hi! Not sure if this is the right subreddit to post this in, but I am in need of advice. Last night I (female) gave my number to a bartender (also female and around my age) with whom I’ve become kind of friendly. I have worked service jobs before and know that it’s often pretty annoying or weird when customers hit on you. But I was a bit buzzed last night, and my friends were telling me that they thought the bartender (let’s call her “maya”) was interested in me. I’ve been going to this bar about once a week for a few months, and maya and I have sort of started to talk a bit. My friends alway ..read more

Waiters don’t take my gratuity pay on a receipt.

Hey people. The title says it. When I try to leave a tip on my debit card, the charge NEVER goes through. I only try to leave 20% or more every time at restaurants. I do feel bad it doesn’t get charged, so sometimes if I do remember, I pull out cash from an ATM to leave it at the table. I’m not a white person. Not a black person. Or even Hispanic. Maybe it is because I am really nice to the waiters? Or do they feel sorry for me? I don’t dress very wealthy looking when going out. It would be nice to hear an opinion from a waiter/waitress. Thanks for the answers! submitted by /u/Fabulous-Gas-1 ..read more

Hey Waiters, you do not deserve a tip if you give terrible service!

I'm seeing a lot of disillusioned servers posting who feel they are obligated to get a high tip amount, irregardless of their service level. Hate to break it to ya but he meaning of GRATUITY is something given voluntarily or beyond obligation. No one is or should be obligated to pay for your terrible service. I'll watch all the down votes and then cross post this to a general thread so you guys can get your echo chamber smashed. submitted by /u/tagman11 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

22F. My background is in CS. I have a degree (finished school really young) and was a security researcher for two years. Eventually realized it was a predatory environment and not what I wanted to do and left. Worked in higher ed (student affairs) doing web design and accessibility work for two years. Got sick of the underpaid high-anxiety neurotic culture of education and left. Been working at a movie theater for 3 months: selling snacks, cleaning theaters, making popcorn. Absolutely love it. It's busy and some nights my register handles $3k in sales, but there are no tips. (They actually wa ..read more

Hey everyone, I'm currently weighing the idea of taking up a job as a waiter with my twin brother, and I thought who better to ask for advice than those who are already in the field? I am a freshman in American standards and it will be my first job. It's a summer job for about two months. The restaurant is a tavern in Greece in a village in which I have spend all my summers since birth. The owners knows us since we were baby's. The working hours are 18-00. What are some of the pros and cons of being a waiter that you've experienced? Are there any tips or advice you wish someone had given you ..read more
