Tennis forehands at a recreational level are unreliable not only because players have flaws in their technique but also because they lack stability when hitting the ball. When hitting a neutral stance forehand, it’s crucial to keep the front foot firmly on the ground throughout the stroke. Similarly, when hitting an open stance forehand, there are two variations. In the first variation, players transfer weight from a very stable right leg (for right-handed players) to a very stable left leg. In the second variation, players maintain stability on the right leg while hitting the ball ..read more

My tennis student was an gentleman with over 70 years of age and we worked on his groundstrokes for 2 hours. He kept hitting the ball hard even though I kept asking to hit the ball with feel, to slow down, hit the ball nicely and so on. And yet, something was in the back of his mind fighting this idea of hitting the ball effortlessly. After 2 hours he finally stopped whacking the ball and hit a few balls with feel which still flew quite fast over the net. I asked him what changed and he said that he realized that it's ok not to kill the ball on every shot. How sad is that? I asked him who told ..read more

In this flat vs slice tennis serve comparison from top view you can see how small differences in your serve technique can lead to different outcomes. At first glance, my body and racket movement are nearly identical in two serves—the flat down the T and the slice out wide. The key difference is the ball toss and racket angle at contact. For the flat serve the racket is flat on the ball, while for the slice serve, it's slightly angled. Even though the swing looks similar, these subtle changes result in different ball placements and different spins of the ball ..read more

Let’s break down the differences between a flat serve and a topspin serve in tennis. In both types of serves, I'm aiming down the T, and at first glance, the body orientation seems almost the same. However, there are subtle differences that can impact the outcome of each serve. First, when I'm performing a topspin serve, you'll notice that I'm angled slightly more compared to when I hit a flat serve. This is because the topspin serve requires a swing that comes more from the side of the ball, whereas the flat serve involves a straighter, more direct swing path. The ball toss and point of conta ..read more
