Taking care of yourself doesn’t take anything away from the alcoholic or addict in your life. If anything, keeping yourself healthy in body, mind and soul makes you a better partner. But don’t do it for them, do it for you. Loved ones often adapt to the alcoholic’s needs, putting themselves second. Please don’t. It’s important to address your needs — whether that’s making time for therapy sessions, Al-Anon or Nar-Anon meetings, pursuing a passion, going for a run, a night out with a friend or time to yourself.

And readers’ comments reaffirm that
I have been thinking about your book so often and it is still giving me incredible comfort in knowing that I could not have changed his situation without him being ready to change it too. Honestly, I haven’t had a wickedly bad day since I read it, and I am forever grateful to you for giving me that.
What makes this memoir so powerful is McGloin’s vulnerability and humor. Bottles in the Basement had me shaken by the sadness of watching this romance and marriage fall victim to addiction but also profoundly inspired by the author’s perseverance and upliftin ..read more

The basement wasn’t just a place in our house, it was an interloper in our home. The basement is where my husband went to be an alcoholic. Just as Manhattan wasn’t merely a backdrop to Sex and the City but a fifth character in the show, our basement played a part in our marriage. It was a conduit for Robert’s alcoholism, enabling him to hide his addiction. It was a wedge between us, providing an escape from our life ..read more

No better feeling for a writer than connecting with readers!
At a recent book signing, I had the opportunity to speak with loved ones of alcoholics. While it’s heartbreaking to know people are going through difficult times, it’s also heartwarming to hear how telling my story has helped others process their pain and suffering.
“Reading your book made me feel less alone.”
“I could not put the book down. It tells a real life story about the disease of alcoholism.”
“I read Bottles in the Basement in a day.”
For those of you living with or having survived an alcoholic, you will find comfort in the ..read more

What readers are saying:
Reading your book made me feel seen during this awful phase. So much of what you described hit home for me and gave me a sense of peace that I am not alone in this experience. When I woke up Friday after finishing your book the prior night, I felt a lightness I haven’t felt in months, or maybe years. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for having the courage and tenacity to write ab ..read more
