Yesterday, we left the bustle of Accra to travel north to a mountain town called Akropong. In the quiet of town life, students at the Akrofi-Christaller Institute (ACI) complete their Master’s and PhD level studies in theology. ACI is the first private theological institution to receive a charter to focus on African Christianity. Western colonizers brought Christianity to the continent as early as the 15th century and encountered African traditional religions. Western Christianity spread, and for some, at the expense of their traditional cultural identities. ACI explores the intersection of pr ..read more

Today’s Ghanaian journey started at the Kakum National Park in southern Ghana, near the coast. The park’s prominent landscape is tropical forest, accounting for 90% of its area. It is one of three places in Africa with a canopy walk through the trees. Within the park boundaries are 266 species of birds, buffalo, forest elephants, civets, Colobus monkeys, red river hogs, giant forest hogs, pangolins, and dwarf crocodiles. We experienced the unique canopy trail. It stretches between 7 trees, cross rivers, and ravines. At the end of the trail, we tried fresh coconut water and ..read more

Happy Sunday, everyone! The Ghana seminarians had an eventful and exciting day! We started the day early with a 7am exuberant worship service at Grace Congregation-West Legon. The Ghanaian worship was a beautiful display of community, filled with dancing, singing, and joyful praise! The service was a highlight for all of our seminarians, not just because of the kind welcome the people showed us but also because it made us feel a part of something meaningful. It was emotional when we were brought up on stage to pray over our journey forward and gift us with Kente Stoles. The hugs, the Akwa ..read more

Today’s Ghanaian journey started early: Breakfast at 7:30, and then we set off for a four-hour bus ride to Cape Coast. Today’s activities consisted of two historic and sensitive tours: Elmina Castle and Cape Coast Castle are located on the shores of the Gulf of Guinea, infamously known for their enslavement trading. Our first tour was of Elmina Castle, built in 1482 by the Portuguese, the oldest enslavement dungeon on the coast. The second Cape Coast Castle was built by the British in 1664. Each tour was emotional as we learned about the separate dungeons for males and females. Each was d ..read more

Asomdwoe nka wo—peace be with you! We started the day with a delicious egg sandwich and loaded onto the bus headed for Trinity Theological Seminary in Legon, Ghana. We were welcomed straight off the bus and given a tour of the 70+ acre campus. We moved into a classroom to learn simple words/phrases that would help convey our appreciation to our hosts. We attended two lectures led by Very Rev. Prof. J. Kwabena Asamoah-Gyadu, President of Trinity Theological Seminary, and Rev. Prof. David N. A. Kpobi. We learned more about Christianity in Africa; the President of the Seminary described it a ..read more
