The Time to Act to Prevent Gun Violence Is Now
Presbyterian Peace Fellowship | Emily Brewer's blog

Once again, a community in the United States is terrorized by a white man with a semi-automatic assault style rifle. This time it is in Maine. According to Gun Violence Archives, including last night’s shooting in Lewiston where at least 18 were killed and over a dozen more injured, there have been 565 American mass shootings (defined as four or more people shot) in 43 different states (and Washington D.C.) in the 299 days of 2023.  That’s about two mass shootings every day. Only seven states are without a mass shooting this year. We are in a crisis that would make Jesus weep.  While ..read more

“… guide our feet in the way of peace” As recent events in Gaza and Israel underscore, the first casualty of war is innocent lives. The hundreds who died in the explosions at al-Ahli Hospital in Gaza City are the most recent civilian lives lost in the violence in the region. More than 3,400 people have been killed in Gaza in the past 10 days; two-thirds of them children. More than 1,400 people have been killed in Israel, most of them civilians killed when Hamas attacked on October 7. But these lives are not numbers—each has been a loved one, a human being who deserves more than being added to ..read more

For from the least to the greatest of them,    everyone is greedy for unjust gain; and from prophet to priest,    everyone deals falsely. They have treated the wound of my people carelessly,    saying, ‘Peace, peace’,    when there is no peace. (Jeremiah 6:13-14) With the words of Jeremiah ringing in our ears, Presbyterian Peace Fellowship condemns the attacks by Hamas on civilian and military targets in Israel, and Israel’s attacks on civilian and military targets in Gaza. An eye for an eye leaves the entire Middle East blind to an ..read more

9/11 Memorial Pool (photo credit: Nadia Eimandoust) Standing on the steps of the Godbox at 475 Riverside drive, a Church World Service worker admonished me when I referred to persons affected by 9/11 as “victims.” “There are no victims, only persons,” she said. We were eight months out from the collapse of the Twin Towers. I had been elected to staff the Board of Directors of the New York Disaster Recovery Interfaith Task Force (NYDRI), an ecumenical group of religious and disaster relief organizations brought together by the Council of Churches of the City of New York. We were trying to plan ..read more
