When we shopped for a house in Tucson we were only looking at old houses. We wanted a mid century modern house if possible, and this 1970 house was as close as we could get in our budget. The most unappealing room of the whole house was the master bedroom. It was dark and reminded Andrew of a prison cell with its grey walls, and tiny window that had literal bars on the outside. “Don’t worry,” I told Andrew, “I can fix it.”
Our offer to buy this house was accepted before we even saw the house in real life. “If the offer is accepted, we will immediately get the whole family in the car and come s ..read more

I can’t believe we’re here: Zoe’s final days of high school. Zoe is graduating. I start to tear up as I write this. It seems like just yesterday that she was a little girl, and now she is a young woman. I’m SO incredibly proud of her.
This summer Zoe is going to Los Angeles to stay with a dear friend of mine and be an intern at her talent agency. She’s going to see what it’s like working at a talent agency, she’s going to meet new people, go on auditions, swim in the pool, babysit for my friend when they take Zoe with them for their 10 year anniversary trip, and make so many happy memories. I ..read more

I hope you find this book list (below) useful, either for summer reading or if you want to homeschool, then for homeschooling. I’ve homeschooled my kids for nearly 15 years, so this list comes from a LOT of research and experience.
School isn’t the bad guy. TV isn’t the bad guy. Computer games aren’t the bad guy. We watch TV. We play computer games. But what happens to SOME kids is that going to school and/or watching TV and playing computer games CAN be very overstimulating. Of course, kids don’t have the self-awareness to understand that they’re overstimulated. We parents are often unaware ..read more

My kids like to play the game, Two Truths and a Lie. I’m about to tell you two truths and a lie. Here goes:
When Andrew and I bought our first house, back when we lived in Annapolis, MD, it was a real fixer-upper, and we painted the exterior yellow.
When I was 7 years old my mom was in a commercial that involved shots filmed from a helicopter, and afterwards I got to ride in the helicopter.
When I was 15 I was a Senate Page at the Capitol in Washington, D.C.
Can you guess the lie? Up until this January, we had never before painted a house.
Before we bought our new house in Tucson it was pai ..read more

There are few things that I enjoy as much as eating Chocolate Cake, and one of them is looking at before and after house photos. Delicious. Looking at house photos must trigger the same part of my brain as eating chocolate cake. I love it. And I hope you will enjoy my bedroom before and after as much as I do.
Before the 1980’s in Tucson, almost all of the houses were built with brick (or “block”), and were ranch style. (Nowadays I would say that the trend here is mostly two story stucco houses with tile roofs.) I was so curious about why these older houses were all brick and one story tha ..read more
