You probably know at least one cyclist who is always on their bike. It seems like they ride every day of the week, no matter the weather or their schedule. These riders may have you rethinking your own routine, asking questions like “How often should I ride my bike” or “Should I be cycling every day?” First, stop comparing yourself to others, says Jen Kates, C.P.T., founder of Shift Human Performance. “All too often, we look at what someone else is doing on their highlight reel with their training, and then we look at ours and become discouraged,” she says. “You have t ..read more

How the Breakaway Robbed the Sprinters on Stage 5 of the Giro d’Italia

Maybe it was all that focaccia the riders loaded up on before yesterday’s stage, or maybe everyone just has something to prove in this race, but the theme of the day was full-speed ahead in Stage 5 of the Giro d’Italia. At the end of the 178-kilometre stage, Benjamin Thomas of Cofidis took the team’s first win this season. Following behind were Michael Valgren (EF Education-EasyPost), Andrea Pietrobon (Polti Kometa), and Enzo Paleni (Groupama-FDJ)—a breakaway group that spent half the race with a lead of around one minute over the peloton. Even though sprinter teams like Alpecin-Deceuninck ha ..read more

2024 B-Well Around the Pot, presented by SEESA – King of the Rollers!

So. What’s a ‘roller’? In cycling terms, obviously, this isn’t a Tik-Tok link to granny’s 80s hair regime. One of the best ways to find out for yourself is to head out to Swellendam at the end of July and do some scientific research on your bike. It’s a hill that allows you to roll, medium pace and using your momentum from the previous bit of downhill respite to maintain just enough speed to give a few kicks on the pedals to make it to the crest of the next hillock, enjoy a brief freewheel and repeat. For as many hillocks as the race organisers manage to find for you. The B-Well Around the Pot ..read more

Pat Morewood on Bouncing Back After a Horror Crash

Mountain biking has always attracted the mavericks. You could argue the sport has been built on them – the need to break out of the mainstream, get out into nature and escape the trappings of what is seen as ‘normal’. And yet, even within all this lack of convention a system has grown – a way of doing and consuming things, a convention of its own. KZN biker Pat Morewood has been bucking these restrictions since he home-built his first dual-suspension DH rig, in 2000 – in the process creating two legendary bike brands, in the shapes of Morewood and then Pyga, which he still produces today. Here’s everything you need to know about the 2024 Giro d ..read more
