Today, 5th of February 2021, is my seventh surgiversary! Holy moly. I was a little bit ashamed when I came to do this post on the fly and saw that the last time I posted was on my Sixth Surgiversary a year ago. I said in that post that I was going to have more of a focus on my blog over the coming year and then 2020 happened. I think it derailed pretty much everyone’s plans and we all focused on doing what we needed to in order to get through an incredibly stressful time. Anyway, 2021 is upon us and you never know, it could be the year I find a semi regular posting schedule for my blog again ..read more

February the 5th marks my sixth surgiversary. Another year has passed and now it’s been six years since I had my gastric bypass surgery. Life is good, if not increasingly back to normal, and my gastric bypass remains a small but important part of my life story. The decision to have a gastric bypass remains as the best decision I have ever made for myself. Absolutely no regrets! The biggest thing to change in my life last year were my exercise habits! For the last few years I’ve really been into running and have got so much enjoyment out of it. I tried for at least six months to get myself back ..read more

I am so excited to hand the reins over to Michelle today. She’s the second awesome person to let me interview her for my interview with a bypasser series. I have been following Michelle’s journey on Instagram for quite a while now I love how straight up and honest she is about life post-op gastric bypass. It’s seriously inspiring how dedicated she is to her training and damn this woman can smash out a workout. Michelle’s Instagram handle is a fantastic play on words and is the first clue to just how cool she is. Head to Instagram and look her up @optifastandfurious if you want to follow Michel ..read more

Just like that another year has passed! I never imagined I would still have my blog and be posting to it four years after I started it.  If you’ve been here from the beginning, thank you so much, I will never be able to convey how much your support means to me. If this is the first post you’ve ever read on my blog, hello and welcome, I hope you stick around! I was just over a year out from my RNY Gastric Bypass and now I’m more than five years post-op. In some ways it seems like it was yesterday, but then at times I can struggle to remember exactly what life was like before. Leading up to ..read more

Plastic surgery after weight loss surgery?
Melissa Loses It
by Melissa Peaks

There’s not much that’s as divisive in the weight loss surgery community as having plastic surgery after weight loss surgery can be. I’ve really noticed on Instagram, especially lately, that if someone is posting anything to do with plastic surgery there will be negative comments from others about it. This is a bit surprising coming from a community of people who are generally very supportive of each other. The decision to have plastic surgery is a very personal one. Just like, umm, I don’t know, maybe the decision to have weight loss surgery was for each of us. So why the negativity? When we ..read more

What I think may have contributed to my morbid obesity

This post has been on my mind for a long time. Obesity is a very complex thing. It can’t be reduced to a few simple things like eating too much and not getting enough exercise. Let’s not even mention that what works for one person will not necessarily work for everyone else. The set of circumstances that lead to some of us reaching the point of morbid obesity are different for each individual. I think we’ve all wondered at one point, ‘why me?’ why do some people have a much easier time managing their weight than I do? Why do some of us end up morbidly obese and others not? Fundamentally, it ha ..read more

What changes will weight loss surgery bring to my life?

Weight loss surgery is one of the few things that will bring on change in almost every part of your life. There are not many single actions or decisions that you make in your life that will influence, shape and change almost everything around you. The possibilities and uncertainty that an upheaval like this brings can be absolutely terrifying, and I’m sure in some cases it puts people off having bariatric surgery completely. I want to frame it in a different way for you today, the way we think about things is very powerful and if we get excited about the possibilities, instead of being afraid ..read more

Advocating for yourself with health professionals after Bariatric Surgery

Bariatric surgery brings many benefits to the vast majority of us who decide it’s the best option but it does bring some restriction and boundaries. These restrictions and boundaries are mostly around food and our intake but there’s also some important health related things that we need to take on board and ensure we stick to. Unfortunately, we can’t always rely on the health professionals we deal with to know all the ins and outs related to our weight loss surgery. Bariatrics is a specialist area in healthcare and while more and more health professionals are becoming aware of it and learning ..read more

It’s my five-year surgiversary!

Today is my five-year surgiversary. I had my RNY Gastric bypass five whole years ago. It seems ridiculous to think of now but in the time leading up to and immediately after surgery I never thought about what it might be like at this point, so far down the road. Before my bypass I was filled with hope, my future was a huge unknown and the possibilities excited me. I was careful to limit my expectations to avoid disappointment, but still I dreamt big on what my future could look like after weight loss surgery. When I started this journey I was 132kg and had a BMI of 48. I was morbidly obese. Ni ..read more
