Last week we were advised by ASIC that we had met all the requirements in our transition to a company limited by guarantee structure. Orienteering Australia Inc. is now Orienteering Australia Ltd. This transition has taken a number of years to complete and meets a key governance requirement for continued recognition by the Australian Sports Commission (ASC). It helps to ensure that Orienteering Australia continues to be recognised by the ASC as the National Sporting Organisation (NSO) for orienteering in Australia. The Alice Springs Masters Games are rapidly approaching, 12 – 19 October 2024, and orienteering is one of the sports on offer. The 2024 Junior World Orienteering Championships were held in Pilsen, Czech Republic from 30 June – 7 July. The city of Pilsen is the fourth largest city in Czechia. It lies at the confluence of four rivers with lots of water bodies and forests. It was founded in the 13th century, and thanks to that it has a lot of unique monuments. Orienteering Australia is saddened to learn of the passing of one of our former Presidents in Bob. Bob was a true icon of our sport. He was a leader, promoter, communicator, manager, organiser, planner, controller, competitor, and mentor. Bob gave so much to our sport as a passionate member of Orienteering ACT and with Orienteering Australia. Bob started orienteering in 1977 and was elected to the ACT Orienteering Association Board in 1986. Last weekend (29-30 June 2024) was the WOC 2024 Test Races in Edinburgh where five of our WOC athletes ran in preparation for next week: Mikayla Cooper, Henry McNulty, Brodie Nankervis, Ewan Shingler and Caitlin Young. Angus Haines also competed, getting some training in for World Uni’s in August. Last weekend two of our WOC runners, Brodie Nankervis and Ewan Shingler, joined Mary Fleming (team manager and UK local) at the British Sprint Orienteering Championships. Day 1 – 22 June: Mixed Sprint Relay They first competed in the British Mixed Sprint Relay as an unofficial team of Ewan, Brodie, Mary and one of Mary’s UK clubmates Amicia Lee. The European Youth Orienteering Championships were held in Szczecin, Poland from 21-24 June 2024. EYOC is the largest participated competition on the IOF calendar, with 34 nations competing in the European U16’s and U18’s championships. Each nation can have 4 runners in each of the M/W16’s and M/W18’s. We first had Australians run in 2016 and have been competing ever since. Aston Key won M16 in 2016 and M18 in 2018, and it has served all those competing in it as a great first experience into International level racing.
