Growing up I loved to play games of strategy like Chess, Risk, and Stratego. These were games that forced me to think, instead of just games of chance. Strategy is defined as “a plan of action or policy designed to achieve a major goal or overall aim.” As important as strategy is for a game, it is even more important for how we live our life as a follower of Christ. Strategy answers the question “How will we get there?” In other words, how will we accomplish the mission and vision God has for us as individuals and as a church? Tony Morgan from the Unstuck Group puts it this way: “What are th ..read more

What is our mission? What is our vision? What is our strategy? Throughout history every church has asked these questions at some time or another, and we are no different.  In fact, for the last nine months, we have been praying and talking about what our mission, vision, and strategies are for Christ UMC. We began off with a 200-day Prayer Calendar to lead us into Visioning 2029, which was held on September 29, 2018. That day we began to clarify the mission, vision, and strategy that God has for us as a church.  This weekend we are kicking off our new sermon series called “Mission ..read more

This week as we continue our series on “The Transformed,” we are looking at “The Transformed Life.” Being transformed forces us to make a thorough or dramatic change in form, appearance, or character.  For example, we have experienced a dramatic change in the form of our weather over the last couple of days.  Wednesday night we kicked off our GROWednesday dinners and classes which provided a  wonderful opportunity to transform our own form, appearance, and character. However, we have to remember, that to truly experience a transformation in our lives takes an encounter with God ..read more

This week we are starting our new sermon series called “The Transformed.” This weekend we are looking at the story of the Magi, and the journey they took to find Jesus. Why were they following the star? How did they know of its importance? The Bible doesn’t tell us, but the Bible does tell us that the Magi came from the East. History tells us that the major empires to the East had been the Babylonian and the Persian empires. We also know that the Babylonians specialized in studying the stars, which gives us some insight as to why they were following the star. Matthew 2: 2 gives us the reason ..read more

Christ UMC has had a fairly good 2018. We have done a lot of work in the community, shared the love of Christ with people who haven’t yet heard the good news, and grown and strengthened our own relationship with God. Now, I have an important question to ask. As we get ready to begin 2019, what are we going to put on in order to “Dress For Success?” How does one “Dress For Success” in this life? What are we going to wear to ensure that our life will continue to be enduring and satisfying? Paul, in Colossians 3:12-14, has some suggestions for how to “Dress For Success”. Come and join us this we ..read more

It’s hard to believe, the final Sunday of Advent is this weekend, and Christmas Eve is almost here. Hopefully, you are done with all your shopping, wrapping, and “prepping” and can take some time to join us this weekend to celebrate the coming of the Child to be born who will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace, as He is referred to in Isaiah chapter 9. This weekend we are looking at the idea of reconciliation. According to the Cambridge Dictionary reconciliation is defined as “the process of making two people or groups of people f ..read more

This week we are continuing our Reel to Real sermon series, looking at the idea of expectations through the eyes of Mary and the angel. Expectations play a big role in our lives every day. We have this idea of what things should look like. I recently read a quote that sums up the idea of expectations for me: “We expect anything and everything. We expect the contradictory and the impossible. We expect compact cars which are spacious; luxurious cars which are economical. We expect to be rich and charitable, powerful and merciful, active and reflective, kind and competitive. We expect to be ..read more

We are in the middle of our consecration season. I want to take a minute to explain what consecration, stewardship, and pledging are so that you better understand the “churchy” words we sometimes use. At Christ Church, we interpret the term stewardship as assuming responsibility for the welfare of the church community, for the upkeep of the physical plant, and for continuing the church’s legacy and leadership in programming and service. Stewardship involves offering our gifts, our prayers and our service to build inclusive community, sha ..read more
