Following up on our Conference, the committee will be meeting this month to determine a date and location for next year’s conference.  Many on the committee feel we have outgrown Lionhead, and that is a shame as we have had many good programs with their help. The biggest topic of discussion, and application of effort, has been the release of the Insurance Bureau of Canada’s report that mostly focussed on training of drivers in the country. TTSAO was one of the stakeholders participating in the research and compilation of issues and solutions.  The Press Release coming out of IBC note ..read more

This week’s Tip of the Week takes a different direction. When training, we need to speak to our students or drivers about fatigue. Fatigue has the negative effect of draining a person’s ability to be attentive, alert and responsive to road conditions. Many experienced drivers will tell you that they only need five to six hours of sleep while in the sleeper or at home. Studies by the FMCSA and CCMTA confirm that the driver should be getting seven or more hours; this is where the off time for sleeping comes in at eight or 10 hours, depending on which side of the b ..read more

This Training Tip of the Week will take us down a different road, where we’ll talk about Driver Distractibility! This is an article on a small item that affects more drivers than you would think. The best method is to educate your students about different types of distractions (and how to avoid them). Have you ever driven your car with a small piece of white paper sitting on your dashboard? It may be a parking receipt or grocery list for later; regardless of what it is, that little white piece of paper will naturally defer your focus away whenever you ..read more

TTSAO Training Tip – Be Prepared to Stop Safely in the City

We are training our students and drivers to be prepared to stop safely in the city when the traffic light turns red. All of us know that the cautionary yellow means STOP, if you can do so safely. It does not mean speed up to get through the intersection before the light turns red, nor does it mean that you have to slam on the brakes to stop. Yellow is a warning that the light is about to turn red and be cautious with your approach. This Training Tip helps promote that cautionary approach, and it is one to learn to use for safe application of the brakes when drivi ..read more

We have wrapped up the 2024 Conference, Taking a Quantum Leap Forward, and it was a resounding success. We sold out our sponsorships and our attendance this year, and had a fantastic group of presenters and speakers that made our day interesting and informative. A number of new sponsors came forward, and as a result we have a sponsor roster that our schools can call upon for programs and support that weren’t available previously. The big announcement came at noon when the CVTA did their announcement that we are able to clone their Instructor Certification program for Ontario. This is a major s ..read more

TTSAO Training Tip – Proper Procedures for Joining and Exiting a Major Highway

This is a challenge for any new driver and can present a problem for experienced drivers if they are not careful. On Ramps To join onto a major highway, you have to take a ramp on to the lane beside the main lanes of the highway. This lane is called the Acceleration Lane, which makes sense because you need to accelerate to join the other vehicles on the highway. When taking a tractor-trailer onto a major highway, it is important to match the speed of the other vehicles. This is called ‘finding your Merge Speed’. If you can properly match that speed by a) accelerating the complete ..read more
