This week’s Training Tip looks at practicing the “fundamentals.” Sports teams work on fundamentals every practice so that it becomes ingrained in the unconscious and cemented into muscle memory. How’s that for a sports analogy when dealing with driving Big Rigs? Today, we will look at the fundamental for making a left-hand turn. Going to basics, it will look like this: Setting up Location, location, location Clear path Timing and speed Clearance and landing Finishing Since left-hand turns tend to be the more dangerous, this is the better one to evaluate. Who said you don’t need math to drive a truck?! This week’s Tip is to make a simple math equation: One move = One signal. This is an equation that anyone can understand. If you are going to make more than one lane change, or a lane change to set up a turn at an intersection, every single move requires a signal. To take a line from the Karate Kid, and make a euphemism of it, “Signal On, Signal Off.” Don’t judge drivers based on their signaling; this is how collisions occur. So, exactly where will this be needed? When on a highway and exiting, if not in the right-hand lane already, setting up ..read more

This week is a little more advanced in taking your student or driver to the next level. We are talking about Predictive Behaviour. When driving Over the Road it will become apparent that the other drivers around you will do sudden moves that will impair your ability to maintain safety. This is a crucial fact to expect the unexpected. However, often the driver that creates a problem will give a tell-tale signal that they are about to make a sudden change that impacts your space and safety. Let’s continue with some basic tips on how to improve a driver/student’s Defensive Driving. This week we’ll talk about Mirrors! Clean mirrors and proper mirror adjustment is what it takes to know what and who is around you, and what you need to look out for. Let’s start by making sure your mirrors are clean. A properly adjusted mirror is useless if you can’t see out of it! Clean your side mirrors first, making sure all areas of the Plane mirror (or some will call the WestCoast mirror) is clean to the far ends. Then make sure your convex mirror is also clean. Then move to the hood mirrors and ..read more

September kicked off a busy schedule of contacts, conferences and calls. We continued working on the Instructor Certification project. With the change in leadership at MTO, Caroline Mulroney switching posts with Prabmeet Sarkaria, we have already pressed forward. We were fortunate enough to get an early meeting with the new Minister. We found Minister Sakaria to be very approachable and have a good early grasp on issues important to the TTSAO. It’s a very promising start. Another prominent meeting was held on the 14th at the OTA office. I met with Geoff Wood to discuss our areas of common conc ..read more

Let’s continue with some basic tips on how to improve a driver/student’s Defensive Driving. This week we’ll talk about Lane Discipline! Why is Lane Discipline important? First, let’s identify what lane discipline actually is. As a driver it is important to know where you are expected to be, as well as knowing where all the other drivers are supposed to be. To stay safe, and not be in contact with any other vehicle or item, our students and drivers need to stay within the confines of their lane, and not wander. If a truck hugs the lane next to the dotted line, other drivers will think that tha ..read more
