When Antoinette “Bonnie” Candia-Bailey, the former vice president of student affairs at Lincoln University in Missouri, died by suicide on January 8, 2024, it was a major shock while also bringing attention to the obstacles many Black women in academia experience. Dr. Candia-Bailey had previously accused the school’s president, John Moseley, of harassment and discrimination and received a termination letter from the historically Black university on January 3. Moseley was reinstated to his position of university president in March, after an investigation found no evidence of bullying. This trag ..read more

Do you remember the viral question, “What if Harry Potter went to an HBCU in the South?” The hashtag #BlackHogwarts was born, and we allowed our imaginations to run wild. We had a time pouring hot sauce, swag, and invisibility Timbs all over a fantastical tale that we loved but that largely overlooked our community.  Unfortunately, we’re accustomed to that. Despite tropes like the magical negro, we are often ignored in storylines that are mythical. But while we had our fun, the idea was more than a fad for the man who started it all. LaDarrion Williams has labored for four years to bring ..read more

Not My Brother’s Keeper: Why Charles Xavier and Juggernaut Can Only Be Enemies, Never Brothers
Black Girl Nerds

2006’s X-Men: The Last Stand might have introduced Juggernaut to the silver screen (Vinnie Jones) but it was 2018’s Deadpool that introduced moviegoers to a more canon version of the character. The latter is portrayed by David M. Leitch, an American filmmaker, stunt performer, stunt coordinator, and actor, although the character was actually voiced by Ryan Reynolds himself. Comic book fans of X-Men have actually known Juggernaut for quite some time now, since the character first appeared in 1965’s The X-Men #12 as the human step-brother of Professor X, whose sibling is set to appear in Deadpoo ..read more

For the first time in history, video game movie adaptations are actually worth their screen time in terms of quality. Many would point to the success of the recent Super Mario Bros Movie as proof, but Mario only cemented the idea that the next decade in Hollywood belongs to video game adaptations — since the previous belonged to comic book superheroes. If anyone would like to argue that statement, we can always point to the ratings garnered by the Last of Us and Fallout adaptations. We also shouldn’t forget tabletops; sure, video games might dominate the gaming market, but tabletops still make ..read more

The election of Barack Obama as President of the United States in 2008 was a significant and historical moment for many African Americans, and it was viewed as a monumental step in the ongoing struggle for civil rights and racial equality. However, many of us can remember being told in winks that Obama actually wasn’t our first African-American President; rumor has floated for some time that Abraham Lincoln was of a much “ruddier” complexion than those of his time — which could be attributed to his growing up in a log cabin as an outdoorsman. Beyoncé Knowles-Carter is not playing with us, per usual. In February, the Queen Bey’s new hair care line Cécred was launched to the world. The lineup consists of eight cruelty-free products, rooted in the belief that hair is sacred and designed with all hair types and textures in mind. With shampoos to a hair treatment mask, prices range from $30 to $52. The brand also has a cosmetic bag, a ritual shaking vessel, and product kits and bundles. The packaging for Cécred is like sculptures, beautiful enough to display on your vanity. I saw a lot of people on social media hesitant to support the ..read more
