Coach’s Corner by Pat Bradley (World Champion National Team and Club Crew Coach) Some dragon boat coaches refer to the working part of the paddling stroke as the ‘pull phase’. Most athletes (especially newer paddlers) when instructed to ‘pull’ will employ their outside arm to generate power, thus bending their arm using the bicep muscle. Like every single dragon boat paddler I know, I was feeling very depressed about not being able to paddle. Not only was I missing my teammates, but also the feel of my paddle moving through the water. Paddling is a very meditative experience. The rhythmic movement of the stroke and the need to quiet your mind and focus solely on the present. There is no other activity in the world that fills this void for me.     As the number of dragon boat teams, paddlers and supporters continue to grow, it’s no surprise that a kinship has formed in the community around the passionate push to support and promote the sport, both on and off the water. Hornet Watersports, a strong advocate for dragon boating and its community, started an alliance with the Filipino team SAG1 Dragon Boat two years ago. It's the beginning of a new year and Hornet is ready to hit the road. Our first festival where we will be a vendor is at the Arizona Dragon Boat Festival in Tempe, Arizona just outside of Phoenix.
