During the week of April 8 through April 14, Hawai‘i Island police arrested 16 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant.
Seven of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. One driver was under the age of 21.
So far this year, there have been 267 DUI arrests compared with 288 during the same period last year. This is a decrease of 7.3%.
The Hawai‘i Police Department’s Traffic Services Section reviewed all updated crashes and found 289 major crashes so far this year, compared with 275 during the same time last year. This represents an increase of 5.1%.

In light of multiple power outages on the Big Island and O‘ahu this past weekend, three state senators sent a letter to the Public Utilities Commission expressing concern about the recent power blackouts.

The driver charged with fatally striking a pedestrian last Saturday made her first appearance in Hilo District Court on Tuesday afternoon.
Sienna Tavares-Brown’s bail was maintained at $158,000 and she was ordered to appear for a preliminary hearing on April 18.

A 3-and-a-half-foot long ball python was found in an O‘ahu home after officers responded to do a wellness check on the resident who was dead.

The snake was discovered on April 13. Honolulu Police Department contacted the Plant Quarantine Branch of the Hawai‘i Department of Agriculture and inspectors were immediately dispatched to the Waipahu home and took custody of the non-venomous ball python. The sex of the snake has not been determined and is being safeguarded at the state agency.

Hawaiian Electric continues to urge all customers on Hawai‘i Island to reduce their electricity use to prevent the need for brief rolling outages tonight.
For the past several weeks, Hawaiian Electric has been asking residential and business customers to conserve electricity due to the unavailability of several large generators and cautioned that rolling outages might be needed if generation falls short of demand.

The Glenwood Recycling and Transfer Station in Puna will reopen to the public starting Friday.
After a tree fell at the site, it was closed for repairs, according to the Department of Environmental Management.
Glenwood Recycling and Transfer Station will revert to its normal schedule of 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday, Tuesday, and Friday. Volcano Recycling and Transfer Station will revert to its normal schedule of 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday, Thursday, Saturday (closed Friday, April 19).

No injuries were reported following a structure fire in Hilo early this morning.
The call came in at 5:14 a.m. When Hawai‘i Fire Department responded to the single-family dwelling on Kaumana Drive, it was engulfed in flames and the occupant of the residence had already evacuated.
