Finding time for myself

I am David’s personal secretary and servant. Such a lucky man, really. Therapists, a nurse and a bathing aide have been calling me to set up appointments. I am very busy emptying his urinals, refilling his portable bidet, water bottles and cannister, changing his clothes, washing his laundry, cooking and cleaning. Oh, the chores are endless. Very difficult with my crippling poly arthralgia. *** Meanwhile, I manage to find pockets of time for myself. I relish the time I spend in front of the computer and the TV. Since David monopolizes the TVs in the living room and his bedroom, I was forced to ..read more

It’s been a week since David returned home after being bedridden for 3 long months at Nuuanu Hale nursing facility. He fell on Monday and again on Wednesday. Both times the firemen came to lift him off the floor. They even rendered first aid when he gashed his right leg on the transport chair after falling off the chair. On Thursday, a PT from Castle Adventist Health came to evaluate David. After I told her that David had fallen twice, Nia gave us a few tips on how to prevent future falls. First, I am to bring the transport chair to his calves. When David feels the chair touching his calves, h ..read more

Memories of Molokai, Hawaii

Molokai is the island in red in the Hawaiian chain. *** David and I visited Molokai in 2003. It’s really laid back and mellow, rarely in the news. We stayed at the now-defunct Sheraton Lodge: *** We took a Cessna to Kalaupapa, which is a peninsula of Molokai. It’s where the lepers lived, when they were ostracized by the Hawaiians. A few lepers still remain. However, leprosy (aka Hansen’s Disease) is curable with medication, so no new patients are sent there. Kalaupapa is now a U.S. National Park. Cessna: Father Damien and Mother Marianne Cope have been canonized saints by the Roman Catholic ..read more

After 3 long months of rehabbing his surgically repaired left leg, David finally left Nuuanu Hale nursing facility and returned home on Monday. This is David walking to his lift chair as Maria watched: Monday evening, I had the table set with our salad and salmon dinner. David got up from his lift chair, then pivoted sharply to the right to go to the dining room. He lost his balance and fell on his left side with the walker falling on top of his right leg. At the time, I was holding onto his transport chair, waiting for him to come to me. I picked up the walker off his leg, and he rolled onto ..read more

Julia: Going to U of Utah

My 16-year-old granddaughter, Julia, is currently a junior in high school. But already the University of Utah has accepted her to be a member of its soccer team. Utah was her first and only choice, and she is absolutely thrilled to be going there in the fall of 2025. The Utah campus is beautiful, and the surrounding community has a good vibe. Besides, Julia is a baptized Mormon, so the Utah Mormon heritage fits in with her beliefs. Her oldest cousin is currently a senior in high school and has also been accepted to the University of Utah. He is a baptized Mormon, too. Julia will have a familia ..read more

Beautiful hands, meant for the piano! (Pianist unknown) *** Me, age 27, in New York (1973): *** I have been listening to CDs on my stereo. Primarily classical music. It’s a mellow way to pass the time. Listening to beautiful piano music yesterday triggered a sweet memory. There was an attractive pianist I dated a few times in New York back in the early 1970s. He was a brown haired, brown eyed white dude, about 5’8″ tall, who made his living as a high school math teacher. We struck up a friendly conversation when I was walking on the campus of Columbia University, where I was a graduate stude ..read more

A relative of mine told me that her ex-boyfriend from long ago now works as a bartender in a strip club his mother owns. Puhleeze!!! How low can you go? What creepy people! I guess I am just an effete snob. My standards are extremely high. *** My sisters and I were discussing the types of men, who appeal to us. I told them that I am attracted to tall white men, who like classical music. Classical music lovers know the history of music in western civilization and can listen to a complex symphony and make sense out of it. David is such a man. He is a retired comptroller, who studied classical mu ..read more

Our family gathered at Nuuanu Hale yesterday to celebrate David’s 75th birthday. With Rylan (14) and Grant. Julia was too sick to attend: With Maria: We ordered Chinese food from Panda Express. David said he was tired of the bland food at the nursing home and really craved Chinese cuisine. It was a treat for him. Chow mein, Honey walnut shrimp, and Beijing beef: Spring roll and Apple pie roll: Birthday candle on a Long John: After 3 months at Nuuanu Hale, David can now walk. He will be coming home on March 18, about a week earlier than planned: A van and driver have been reserved to tran ..read more

As you may know, I was a globe trotter for many years, beginning with my trip to Maui in 1967 and ending with my trip to India in 2012. Today, I would like to mention those restaurants that remain vivid in my memory, simply because the cuisine was so extraordinary, and the restaurants were so beautiful. *** Ondine: Sausalito, California (1968). Ondine was an elegant restaurant on the water, jutting into San Francisco Bay: I ordered a succulent Duck Breast a l’Orange with green beans and rice pilaf. This is the best way to prepare duck, I swear. The roasted duck was served with oranges, cooked ..read more

My favorite island: Oahu, Hawaii
Gigi Hawaii

Oahu is the island in red in the Hawaiian chain. *** Our Hawaiian weather ranges from 55F in the winter to 89F in the summer. The air quality is excellent. This is due to the trade winds, which blow away the air pollutants. I have been to all of the islands except Niihau (privately owned by the Robinsons) and Kahoolawe (formerly a bombing target for the U.S. Navy). Oahu is the best. It has everything I could possibly want: Culture, fine restaurants, mountains, beaches, everything. My family lives on Oahu, too, which is another good reason to live here. *** These are photos of Oahu that I have ..read more
