What happens when your bouncebackability feels like it’s no longer there and you simply can’t just bounce back after another knock? This week I’ve been chatting to numerous businesses who are feeling just like that, they have faced a pandemic, rising fuel costs, late payments and now simply the cost of doing business is just too much – one cafe business reported that the cost of cocoa powder had risen from £5.25 a kilo last month to a staggering £12.95 this month! But it’s not just the figures that aren’t stacking up, in the Federation of Small Business’s latest regional Small Business Index ..read more

The last few days have been very exciting for me as I’ve been delivering a programme that is very dear to me. Many years ago, when I first started coaching I was drawn to working with women in business, as I could see how much the work I did could help them.  About two years ago I had the insight to run an online programme, however, when I went out and talked to women in my business network they wanted an in person event so I started to plan such an event in the summer of 2020! As you know everything changed and I explored running it online.  Things quickly fell into place and I successfu ..read more

This week has been a particularly busy week as we launched our peer-to-peer business growth programme ‘Your Small Business Board’ I have to admit it has a very special place in my heart, as there is nothing quite like bringing together a group of likeminded business owners and giving them space to connect, share and support each other.  Running a business can be a lonely, stressful experience and it’s good to know that others are experiencing exactly the same as you sometimes!  One thing that I find a lot of new business owners struggle with, is knowing what to invest in their busine ..read more

If I thought that I was going to gently ease myself back into work after my summer holiday, I would have been disappointed! The last couple of weeks have been unbelievably busy, whilst I’m not complaining I couldn’t have pulled it off without the help of my amazing assistant and my business partner!   I’ve always loved working in a team, pulling together to get a project off the ground, seeing a vision become reality, but it’s often something that those I work with struggle with. Whether it’s a manager or a business owner, creating that shared vision, having your team pull together ..read more

Reducing your stress one consequence at a time

This week has been a busy one as I completed my MSc study into reducing stress amongst female business owners. It almost seemed an impossible task to reduce stress levels at this challenging time, with many business owners struggling to pay their energy bills, some contemplating closure or difficult decisions such as reducing staff and almost all fearful of what the future holds. In many ways I was little nervous at running the programme as I was concerned at how it would be received, however, my MSc timetable and the fact that the study had been chosen some months ago, dictated that it had to ..read more

I was having a conversation the other day with a colleague who was sharing with me how their eldest, who had just left sixth form, had recently got their first job and how excited they were to receive their first pay cheque, and their starting salary was £18,000! It was a trainee position so they felt they had the best of both worlds, being paid to continue training and learning, it reminded me of when I first left college and got my first job, I thought I was earning a fortune!   I shared this with my colleague, that when I started out, I was earning around the same, maybe a bit les ..read more

In what seems like a blink we are now in September! I’m not sure how that happened, then I think we say that every year don’t we? However, the end of August always feels like it is a more defined end than most months, maybe it’s because September was the start of a new school year perhaps, and no matter how old you are that feeling doesn’t leave you.  However, it made me reflect on endings and beginnings, something that I find as human beings we’re not very good at, because we are creatures of habit that don’t particularly like change. But as Chaucer famously said, ‘all good things must c ..read more

Today did not start how I expected, in fact it started not meeting my expectations when I went to bed last night! In my mind I was going to have an early night and then this morning I was going to get up early, as some of my family were leaving for work early, and that, in my mind, was a good excuse to make the most of the morning!  Instead it didn’t quite happen like that, when I went to bed, I got caught up with a couple of things, read a bit too long, then when I did finally turn the light out, my mind was still busy and it took me a while to fall asleep. Then for some reason this morn ..read more

Closing the box of worry

As I’m writing this, it’s an absolutely gorgeous day. The morning sun whilst still rising is strong and bright, the smell of my lemon and ginger tea wafting around my office; Freddie the guinea pig is tucking into his morning celery and Peter the King Charles hasn’t woken up yet! All is well with the world.   But of course, what I haven’t done is open my news app, checked in on social media or even opened my emails. It is a beautiful morning bubble where the day ahead is a little bit like Schrodinger’s Cat, in a box yet to be opened, where it is both wonderful and not, or in the cat ..read more

I’m writing this at the end of the day, which is unusual for me, as I much prefer to write first thing in the morning, with the morning sun streaming into my dining room table and a nice cup of ginger tea wafting in the air. However, tonight I am in my office, the sun is setting, and it is the end of a very busy day, I think my tea is also cold!  I don’t mind busy days at all, I like the variety of going from one thing to the next, ticking things off my list, seeing clients, being in meetings – whatever the day brings. However, I’m having more and more conversations with clients about the ..read more
