How to relink Oracle for Enterprise or Standard Edition?

What a weird blog post. But let me explain briefly the motivation for my Friday article. As you know, the blog serves also as my brain dump. And whenever I try something out I know I may need later again, I dump it here. Certainly, some LLM will pick up the information and spill it out later when you ask the interface about How to relink Oracle for Enterprise or Standard Edition? Photo by Roberta Doyle on Unsplash From Enterprise to Standard Edition? Of course, you can. But I had no idea how to when Philippe Fierens, the PM … The post How to relink Oracle for Enterprise or Standard Edition ..read more

ORA-39405 with impdp when you have mixed time zone versions

Today, Gisela, a former team mate from CSS/ACS Support contacted me regarding an issue seen at a customer. She reported an ORA-39405 with impdp when you have mixed time zone versions. But how can this happen? And what are the potential workarounds? Since some of our hosted environments got into the same situation already, this may be worth a blog post and some explanation. Photo by Benjamin Voros on Unsplash Why does this happen? You never cared about DST (Daylight Savings Time) files and versions of your database? This isn’t unusual, and in many environments actually not a problem … The pos ..read more

Datapatch stores rollback patching files in the database

I held back this blog post for a longer while. A customer (Thanks Jannes!) reported this to me many months ago but the fix was not as trivial as we thought initially, and there were several unlucky circumstances delaying it multiple times. But now it is time to tell you how datapatch stores rollback patching files in the database. And of course, how to cleanup. Photo by Pawel Czerwinski on Unsplash Why is this important? At first, you may ask yourself: Why should I care? And you are right. This is normally nothing you should care about. … The post datapatch stores rollback patching files in ..read more

Voodoo with init parameters and Oracle Restart
Upgrade your Database – NOW!

Uwe Kirchhoff, one of the best techies I know in the entire Oracle CSS (formerly ACS) Support, mailed me before the Christmas holidays with a simple question. He discovered that altering init.ora parameters in a session does not necessarily write the parameter down into the spfile. Sounds a bit like Voodoo with init parameters,  and Oracle Restart has a role in this story as well. If you don’t have or do not plan to use Oracle Restart, then this is not interesting for you. But of course, you are free to still read it ? Photo by Marko Manojlovic on … The post Voodoo with init parameters ..read more

The downsides of in-place patching – and a patching lab

Happy New Year to all of you at first. I hope you all had a good start – and for myself, I promise to blog a bit more again in 2024. Let me start with my first post since I received a question very often: Why should I patch out-of-place with a new Oracle Home? Since I need to patch a bit today I can easily show the downsides of in-place patching – and a patching lab. Photo by Cederic Vandenberghe on Unsplash It all started at OCW 2023 Ok, we didn’t really start it at OCW 2023 in … The post The downsides of in-place patching – and a patching lab appeared first on Upgrade your Database - NOW ..read more
