On Sunday, I ran a personal best time in the half marathon distance. This was three years in the making. Yes, I was three years older than when I ran my fastest and two years older than my last attempt at the distance. However, I showed up at the starting line feeling stronger and more confident in my running ability than I ever had. I was shooting for the stars – aiming for a 2-hour half – and while I missed my “A” goal, I destroyed my “B” goal of running a personal best by knocking nearly 9-minutes off of my previous time. “Oh, you’re the one who’s leading the 5k route? I’ll need the map because I’ll be running ahead of you” Honestly, it’s like the person – who I had never met before – reached into the darkest corners of my brain and pulled out all of my hidden, deep anxieties of not being a good enough runner. Today was national donut day. All over Instagram and Twitter, the following image was plastered… Yes, I obviously follow too many running accounts because I must have seen this image on over a dozen times. Every single time this popped up in my feed, I essentially had to ward off a rage blackout… which would obviously be completely justified.
