PEELE-ING BACK THE LAYERS OF NOPE

This blog contains spoilers for NOPE and should be read after viewing the film. You’ve been warned! It’s a rare occasion that we get to see an original film in theatres these days. We’re saturated in I.P. (Intellectual Property) from video games to comic books to sequels — audiences are not embracing anything that isn’t a sure thing. As of this writing, the only film in the top ten of the domestic box office this year that isn’t officially I.P. is a film about the best selling solo music artist of all time—Elvis Presley. By contrast, NOPE comes purely from the mind of Jordan Peele. A big summ ..read more

“Have you seen _____?” If you are asking me this, and it is a recent or current TV show, the answer is more than likely “Yes!” There’s something comforting about a multi-episode show that speaks to me deeply. Whether it’s a binge or a weekly roll-out – consider me completely invested. Drama, rom-com, thriller, young adult… yes, please! While I have a list of favorite shows in any genre, SciFi and Horror always end up making their way to the top. If you’re looking for something new to watch or are simply wanting to escape the heat this upcoming summer season, chill out with some of my favorite ..read more

TOO. DAMN. LONG.

Back in March I was watching THE BATMAN (2022) at a local cinema-eatery, thinking “where’s the check? They bring it 30 minutes before the end, right?” I wondered about the status of my bill about three times during the movie thinking that surely there wasn’t more than 30 minutes left, but there was…there always was. As you may have guessed, I had gone into the movie unaware that THE BATMAN, at 176 minutes, is just under 3 hours long. I am not the first to point out that 3 hours is a long movie. Every time one of these BEN-HURs gets released, thinkpieces get written that are either about how ..read more

Let’s All Go To The Movies

Everything in our society has a time and a place where affordability and desirability meet and an industry is born. A drive-in can only exist if the land to sit it on is cheap enough. When that land’s value outstrips the income from the drive-in business, the drive-in ceases to be a sustainable venture. As much as we’d like to romantically look at these places - movie palaces, multiplexes, drive-ins, video stores - if they can’t find a proper place with popular support in the routines of society, they cease to exist. Without recognition from local or federal governments for theatres to be reco ..read more

Foo Fighters & GENRE Dave Grohl has always known exactly how to wield a good horror film reference. From the Foo Fighters’ “Everlong” music video (a dreamy, EVIL DEAD-inspired pastiche helmed by Michel Gondry) to Grohl’s recurring role as Satan in the Tenacious D universe, it’s long been a joy to see what he and his crew come up with for our viewing pleasure. In addition to popular horror touchstones, Foo Fighters videos have lampooned everything from materialism to cheesy TV ads to FALLING DOWN’s corporate everyman rage. Ever topical but never pedantic, they’ve always found the fun in ske ..read more

The Incredible Monster Woman Watches a Film

Other Worlds Film Festival recently hosted a Pioneer Film Club chat about double feature selection, The Incredible Shrinking Man and Attack of the 50 Foot Woman. I was excited to dive into these films since they were two I hadn’t yet seen. I read this blog to prepare for what I was about to watch. I finished the viewings with an irksome feeling, a lot of side-eye, and a few pages of notes for the discussion. Beware: Spoilers ahead! The Incredible Shrinking Man… Or Is He? THE INCREDIBLE SHRINKING MAN (Jack Arnold, 1957) came across as the overdramatic lament of a man who was upset his wife di ..read more
