Our blog has always been a great way to both educate and engage with our customers and followers, which we appreciate. These days, we mostly use Instagram and TikTok to show a more personal side of GladRags; if you’re interested in what we’re up to, we recommend checking those out! Being green, an environmentally-themed name was the obvious choice for our newest carry bag! ‘Hazel’ is in reference to Hazel M. Johnson (1935-2011), who is considered to be the mother of environmental justice.

Hazel and her family lived in a housing project called Altgeld Gardens Homes in Chicago’s South Side, managed by the Chicago Housing Authority. Her husband developed lung cancer, which took his life in 1969, and some of her children suffered from skin and respiratory issues. Hazel was motivated to investigate how the neighborhood’s environmental conditions ..read more

Last month, you may have read about our collaboration with The Kwek Society, a nonprofit focused on supplying Native students and communities across North America with menstrual education and supplies. We spoke with the organization’s founder, Eva Marie Carney, to get a more in-depth look at the work they do and impact they have, as well as the many ways you can support them!
The Kwek Society site says: “We are guided by the needs of the individual communities we support.” What are some ways this can look when it comes to menstrual products and education?

GladRags has an option on the website where people can Sponsor Period Supplies for someone in need. We partner with non-profit organizations and provide them with reusable cloth pads and waterproof carry bags that they then distribute directly to individuals within the communities that they serve. Some of the recipient organizations for these sponsored kits to-date include Equitable Giving Circle, Operation Period, The Kwek Society, and Empower Women in Africa.
Many of our period supply sponsors choose to remain anonymous. And to those anonymous sponsors, we extend the biggest thank you fro ..read more

Menstrual Cycles and the Moon go way, waaay back
Though the scientific community is still hmm’ing about the potential synchrony of the moon and menstrual cycles, it is irrefutable that there are cultural and spiritual connections spanning human history that link the moon cycle to the menstrual cycle, making more meaning of the monthly(ish) bleeding experienced by more than half the human population.
Beyond Biology
It isn’t hard to imagine why a menstruating person from long ago would naturally feel a bond with the moon, moving as we do through our own phases, not too dissimilar from the ..read more

As a period care company, we get asked often if the reusable period products we make work for a heavy flow. In a word: YES.
So what exactly is a ‘heavy flow’?
A period is the shedding of the endometrium, which is the lining of the uterus that grows each cycle to support a potential pregnancy. A typical period can range from 4 – 5 days long, with a common loss of menstrual blood being 30 – 44 ml (about 2 – 3 tablespoons). There will be times that will be less typical, like right after menarche (someone’s first period), after pregnancy, and during perimenopause (the years leading up to someone ..read more

Have you ever seen a sign in a grocery store parking lot that says “Don’t forget your bags!”? We want to give a little shout out to the brains behind that helpful reminder, because, yep, there have been times the bags were forgotten, and that sign helped them be retrieved. Reminders can help make for healthier habits. So with a nod of thanks to the “Don’t forget your bags!” sign-maker who helped us make remembering our bags a habit, we thought we’d remind and/or show you how to make a sustainable kit for out and about, and not just for getting groceries.
