Oh no. I’m doing it again. I’ve put my name in the hat to become America’s Next Top Hitmaker!
Call me a sucker for competition (or call me confident in the Elegant Folks’ (my fans’) abilities to help me win competitions like this), but I feel compelled to chase this opportunity.*
Can you help?!

You may have noticed I’ve been quiet since, well, The Before Times.
In 2020, the world went into hiding — and so did I. Venues shut down. Bookings decreased. My “day job” intensified. I had my second child. I turned 40. Combined, this was a surefire recipe for musical retirement.
But then I remember my own advice: Don’t whisper softly the things you want loudly to be.
After an extended absence from live performances, I’m thrilled and thirsty to return to the stage. The anticipation is electric, and I can’t wait to share what I love most (and do best) with you again.

One of the riskier songs I’ve ever written has to be Good Comet. It’s the opening track on New Northbound, and it was placed in that position to make a statement that “this record will be different from the rest.”
So it’s only fitting that the music video for my “risky” song would be pioneering in its own right. Right?

This is a totally new digital direction for me, obviously. But it came together in a totally analog kind of way. My coworker was wishing he had more real-world projects that he could apply his animation skills to.

My family moved from small-town Wyoming to Oregon in 1986 under the promise that there’s an NBA team in Portland. That’s how my parents sweetened the pot to move us here, and that’s how the Portland Trailblazers became one of my biggest passions.
Until I found music.
Now, I’ve been singing my whole life; however, I caught the bug in 1999 when my mom threw me into voice lessons. I’ll be forever grateful for that because it caused me to teach myself guitar, which caused me to write my first song, which caused me to fall in love with the craft and the stage.

It took over a year, but I’m extremely excited and proud to present the How Bright Official Music Video. Now on YouTube and Vimeo, I hope you’ll enjoy this song about love at first sight.
How Bright is the single from New Northbound, my most recent LP. It’s a song about seeing a beaming soul across a crowded room and basking in their warmth from that day forward.

Yesterday was my daughter’s second birthday. Which gave me the perfect opportunity to tease the new In the Loudest Way EP that I’ve been writing for her over the past two years—an EP about change, infatuation and unconditional love.
Yes, it’s safe to say my life has started over. I see things differently now. I feel things differently now. I think about things differently now. For better or for worse, I’ve taken this new perspective and penned an album for Her, from me. But you wouldn’t know it was for a two-year-old little girl—I don’t think. It’s written in a way that speaks generally to new ..read more

As the fifth live recording in the Soldier for the Muse concert series, I’m proud to present Another Gleam Live.
This album has always been one of my favorite collections of songs (a complete remake of See That Gleam from 2008). So, it was a total thrill to revisit the 2013 album in its entirety, telling the stories behind each song and performing them in front of an extremely intimate audience.
Enjoy!

About 18 years ago, I holed up in my parents’ basement for a week to draw each of my musical influences. It was one of the most immersive creative experiences of my life.
I’ve since discovered Josh Ritter. He’s a lyric-first acoustic crooner that changed the way I view songwriting—he’s the reason my pop-rock turned Elegant Folk for good.
Yes, along with Adam Duritz of Counting Crows, it’s safe to say that Ritter is one of my absolute biggest influences. But I haven’t been doing the art thing like I was before.
Well, until now.
I’m back on the easel. Inspired.
