The ‘extremism’ government dares not address
ETA
by Yannick Read
3d ago
This was the week the UK government tied itself in knots over its definition of extremism. Here’s hoping any commitment to tackle ‘the promotion of an ideology based on violence’ leads to an effective campaign against road danger. As a society, we’ve become so inured to road danger, deaths rarely make the news. Writer George Monbiot explained to us how, as a society, we tolerate a level of killing by cars that we would not put up with in any other area. “If you want to kill someone, the best way to do it is in a car because you are highly likely to get away with it. One of the reasons is that ..read more

A mobility scooter built for two? Illegal, says government
ETA
by Yannick Read

Mobility scooters offer a social lifeline for around half a million people here in the UK, and yet two-seater models remain illegal. The same goes for our own cosy mobility scooter caravan pictured above. Tesco gave us permission to test drive it down their aisles, but mobility scooter trailers remain illegal to use on footpaths or the road. We believe mobility scooter users should not be discriminated against in this way. Protect your mobility scooter ETA insurance is already great value at £65 per year to cover a mobility scooter worth up to £3,500. However, you can now buy a couples’ policy ..read more

Most socially radical behaviour on UK roads? Sticking to the speed limit.
ETA
by Yannick Read

At least one third of London roads are now subject to a 20mph limit. However, 87% of drivers break that law when they have an opportunity to, according to TfL research. Here at the ETA, we’re proud to have helped coin the phrase Twenty’s Plenty, and thrilled that over the years it evolved into 20’s Plenty for Us, a campaign group we continue to support. Given the number of deaths and serious injuries on our roads, there’s no justification for 30 mph as the national speed limit. According to 20’s Plenty for Us, “The 30mph limit that was plucked out of the air in 1934 as being better than n ..read more

Puncture? Lost bike lock keys? Flat battery? Cycle Rescue is on call 24/7
ETA

Bicycles are supremely dependable machines, but occasionally they break down. Even the shortest journey comes to an abrupt halt if you can’t fix a flat tyre, broken chain or buckled wheel at the roadside. And if you’re unlucky enough to lose your bike lock key, your ride home may not begin in the first place. It’s why 30 years ago we launched Cycle Rescue  – the UK’s first breakdown cover for bicycles. ETA Cycle Rescue covers all kinds of cycle including trikes and cargo bikes. And if you ride an e-bike bicycle, you’ll be covered against breakdowns caused by mechanical faults, electric pr ..read more

E-bikes get ABS brakes for added stopping power
ETA
by Yannick Read

Every new motorbike in the UK must be fitted with ABS brakes and same technology is now being fitted to e-bikes. As calls grow for bigger e-bike motors, manufacturers are focussing on how to make their cycles stop as quickly as they go. The bigger and heavier e-bikes become, the harder disc brakes have to work. Bosch claims the addition of ABS system could help prevent 29 per cent of e-bike crashes. When you grab a handful of brake lever, ABS uses speed sensors and accelerometers to releasing front brake pressure when before the front wheel has a chance to lock. The action/reaction takes place ..read more

Cycle insurance if you use a bike hangar
ETA
by Yannick Read

Some local authorities provide secure on-street storage areas for bikes, with dedicated keys for users. These ‘bike hangars’ provide secure parking for those without the space to store a bicycle themselves. However, bike hangars are not immune from thieves so many users opt for cycle insurance for added protection. ETA cycle insurance and bike hangars If you have been issued with the key or access code to a bike hangar, then you must lock your bike when its stored inside. Remember to use the correctly rated Sold Secure to lock the bike through its frame. Lastly, if it’s possible to see into th ..read more

E-bike myth busting: Riders get less exercise fallacy debunked
ETA
by Yannick Read

Counter-intuitive it may be, but it’s scientifically proven: E-bikers typically get more exercise than riders of conventional, analogue bicycles. Research has found e-bikes encourage riders to cycle more often and over longer distances. For example, a 2019 study followed 10,000 adults across seven European countries and found that on average electric bike riders were getting more exercise than their pedal bike riding counterparts. E-bikes are heavy E-bikes come in all shapes, sizes and weights. For example, the Brompton electric folding bike tips the scales at 15.6kg. By contrast, the Babboe C ..read more

£50k pollution tax on large SUVs in France
ETA
by Yannick Read
1w ago
Why have SUV sales in the UK have soared by 23% to over one million a year? One reason might be our country’s low tax rates on large, polluting cars. A report by Transport & Environment (T&E) describes the UK as a ‘tax haven’ for bigger, less environmentally friendly vehicles. When you compare the tax paid by UK buyers with comparative levies in neighbouring countries you can see why. If you buy a BMW X5 (196gm/CO2 km) SUV in France, you’ll be charged a acquisition tax of £51,415 – 32 times more than a UK driver would pay. The same car bought in the Netherlands would be taxed the equiv ..read more
