“Every day is a new day. It is better to be lucky. But I would rather be exact. Then when luck comes you are ready.”
“The Old Man and the Sea” ~ Ernest Hemingway
Dawg is a slang word for man, buddy or dude and a Wild Dawg is a dawg that has gone native, or is at least temporarily unhinged and untamed. So when I sing, “The fishin’ trip was choppy and us Wild Dawgs were cocky,” you know the seas were unseasonably rough and everybody expected to catch lots of fish. Nobody expected to get seasick. Turns out the justifiably cocky ones had followed Bobby Montgomery’s advice and gotten the prescrip ..read more

Memories and Music By Jessica Ewy
“Where words fail, music speaks” ~ Hans Christian Andersen
Music is powerful. It has the ability to change your mood, bring you into the community with others and help you remember long ago moments lost by time and age. My life is full of memories associated with music. I have fun memories of my brothers and I singing along to the Everly Brothers, “You Lost That Loving Feeling” and each taking a turn with all the ‘Baby” lyrics. I remember the song “I Wanna Bop With You Baby” by Dan Seals being playing in our living room in the 1980s and wa ..read more

My Covid Road Trip II By Don Wall
“I’m Thankful That Old Road Is A Friend Of Mine” “Snowin’ on Raton” by Townes Van Zandt
We left the August heat of Dallas and headed northwest through the wind farms and oil fields of West Texas and stayed in Raton, New Mexico, and thought about Townes and by morning we were “through them hills and gone.” Part two of our Covid Road Trip put us on the road to Steamboat Springs (“How Bout Them Cowgirls”) to see my daughter and her family. We drove past a sign that read “Ludlow Massacre Monument” and I said “Angel, remember how we drove past ..read more

My COVID Road Trip By Don Wall
Comes a time to put sand under my feet
When the days start feeling same old
After all I still know life is sweet
When I just get up and go
That’s the first verse of a new song I’m writing after a three-week road trip in mid-June during the Corona crisis and the protests after the murder of George Floyd. The road has always been an original source for information and inspiration and that hasn’t changed even though hitting the road can be intimidating these days. We drove from Dallas to Memphis the first night and upon waking we visited the Lorr ..read more

Music and the Spiritual world By Alexis Tapp
My friend, Ben, recently asked me to write something for the DSA blog. I told him I had no idea what I could contribute to the blog or its readers, and he said, “Come on, let’s not have too many slices of Humble Pie, Alexis.” I was taken aback by his comment, feeling my humility, not to mention my lack of confidence, was certainly justified, but I began to feel somewhat swayed. “How about something that comes naturally to you,” he suggested. Still struggling with the whole humility thing, I asked, “What might that be?” He an ..read more

Blue Sea by Bill Kapac
Morning came on easy, night fading from the sky
ocean waves shinning, the color of her eyes
sun rays dancing on the water, fish swimming below
ducks floating in a line, just going with the flow
Aqua colored eyes, invited me within
to her secret world, where i could learn to swim
looking in her eyes, wondering what’s in there for me
nervous and excited, i dove into her blue sea
Water tingling my body, as i explore the sea
my inhibitions gone, her tide directing me
warm calming waters, washed away my fear
swimming straight ahead, i see my path is clear
Aqua colored ..read more
