I have just been informed that there has only been 24 hours of sunshine in Reykjavik in the whole of July, which I think succinctly sums up how it is going. After the brief spell of warmer temperatures last week, the gentle rain and overcast skies have continued and the temperatures have remained low, mostly between 6 – 7 °C and there has even be some snow in the north. The rivers are all at a very good height for this stage of July which bodes very well for those going towards the end of July and the beginning of August. There is supposed to be a temperature rise on the 25/ 26 July to 15°C ..read more

The usual pre-trip excitement and shopping spree was somewhat bittersweet on this occasion. Our initial destination, Norway’s Gaula River, had been closed as one of 33 rivers across the country in an unprecedented move by the government to protect salmon stocks due to a low initial run of fish. Some furious last-minute planning and a few favours called in, saw my group and I boarding a plane in the other direction and heading to Iceland. Our destination, the Stora Laxa on the south coast. The river has undergone some substantial changes in recent years with a view to improving the river and ..read more

Nymphtastic ! So far we have had a summer of rare persistent sunshine but the weather is looking to improve into early August (always the optimist). Fishing has been tricky in the middle of the day on the chalkstreams but those willing to head out first thing or fish until last light have been rewarded with some wonderful surface activity. On a few beats it is allowed so time for the Klink and Dink a large dry fly with a small, weighted nymph tied to the hook of the dry and its double trouble for the fish, or is it ? Some of our beats allow nymph fishing from the 1st July, with most then ..read more
