From the Metro Chicago Synod’s Facebook page today. written by Pastor Tim Brown: Today the church honors the “apostle to the Apostles,” St. Mary of Magdala, more commonly called Mary Magdalene. Mary’s role in the stories of Jesus varies, depending on the account being referenced. In Luke she was one of those healed by Jesus during his ministry (apparently 7 demons plagued her). Some traditions have identified her with the “woman of the city” who anointed Jesus’ feet when he reclined in the Pharisees’s home, though there is no scriptural basis for this. In the Gnostic Gospel of Philip, Mary is ..read more

As the sub-title of Augustana’s weekly newsletter declares, worship is at the heart of everything we do.  Transitioning from our lives to worship and then back out into the world is an element of our shared, community worship.   Gathering for Worship As we gather for worship, please be mindful that for many in our community, they get ready for worship in quiet prayer or contemplation, listening to the prelude and preparing to encounter the divine.  Please greet each other quietly, and hold longer and louder conversations in the narthex.  Postlude The postlude provides ..read more

Most summers, Augustana hosts one youth group, via Youth Works, traveling to Chicago.  Last week, we had a large group from Iowa, that included 25 young people from five different towns and churches.  This summer, instead of one group, Augustana will host a total of four youth groups visiting Chicago, including a group that will be with us in worship this Sunday.  When they stay with us, the groups bring air mattresses and cots, and use the fellowship hall, Gustavus Adolphus room and Nave for meals, worship and space for programs and conversations.   ..read more

Augustana member and artist Robin Mitchell, supported by a grant from the South East Chicago Commission, designed and created a mural for Augustana’s east-facing exterior wall.  The mural has two components and Robin recently installed the final pieces.  In her own words:   Back in 2021, when I was working on getting the “flower” mural on the wall, I was made aware that if I proceeded with what I had done, it would have fallen off the wall. I had to completely dismantle it and start over. Four friends, Nancy Dishno, Sandy Henley, Judy Merritt-Morgan and JoRachel Pier ..read more

On June 8, eighty-two attendees came together for the 2024 fundraising event for the Keith Cooper Fund, established two years ago, after Keith’s death, to provide grant support for young people, in an evening of music, art, food, handcrafted beer, and community. As of this writing, donors contributed an additional $14,626 to the Cooper Fund via the event, through ticket sales, donations, sponsorships and silent auction purchases. Some funds are still coming in, and we estimate the total income will exceed $15,000. Awards were announced to six more young people that evening, supporting them ..read more
