Hi, my name is Valentine, and despite popular assumption, I wasn’t born on Valentine’s Day! My parents named me Valentine, calling me the “fruit of love” in their lives.
Growing up as a mixed-race child in Canada without extended family nearby, I often felt like an outsider, missing the large family gatherings that seemed to define the Canadian experience of my friends. I was raised in Alberta by immigrant parents and, after my parents split, by my mother alone. Without siblings, my friends became my chosen family, my connection to a sense of belonging.

Celebrating 45 Years of Bridging and Enriching Generations!
On July 28th, 2018, we hosted our 12th Annual Volunteer Appreciation Picnic at Confederation Park. This cherished event gives us the opportunity to recognize the valuable contributions of our program participants and volunteers! For our theme this year, we thought: “what better way to celebrate 45 years other than with music?!” and thus invited Los Tambores to perform a fun and interactive musical performance to engage our attendees! Welcome our newest member of Volunteer Grandparents, Maria Pollock. She is currently a Psychology major at the University of British Columbia and is eager to join our team. She enjoys figure skating, reading, pretty much anything Disney and hanging out with her friends.
In the past, Maria has really enjoyed her experiences volunteering for a youth mentorship program called YOUCAN as well as her position on UBC’s Student Leadership Conference Planning Committee that plans a conference for around 1100 students annually. This year marks Canada’s 150th anniversary of Confederation and Volunteer Grandparents celebrated by creating the #150challenge. Launched in mid-May, this ambitious social media campaign’s goal was create 150 posts before the end of July. We wanted to engage people locally and nationally to be part of the Canada150 celebrations and have our organization reach a wider audience. Using all three of our social medial platforms we decided on the hashtag #150challenge and got straight to work.
