How to Export and Import GitHub Issue Labels Between Projects
Douglas C. Ayers – My journey with Salesforce and Technology

While developing Mass Action Scheduler, I came up with my own custom GitHub labels to help me better organize issues and feature requests, as well as be a way to better communicate to users on the status of their feedback. Of all the labels for Mass Action Scheduler, there’s at least 12 of them that I would like to reuse in my other projects. As of July 2019, GitHub does not provide an “easy” way to copy labels from one repository to another. However, after searching the interwebs I did eventually discover multiple ways to do it with varying levels of effort. I thought it’d be nice to share th ..read more

Continuous Integration and Deployment of Trailhead Content: Part 1
Douglas C. Ayers – My journey with Salesforce and Technology

Recently I’ve been developing an internal project related to continuous integration and publishing of content to Trailhead.com–Salesforce’s fun, free, innovative, and hands-on learning experience platform. We define metadata about modules and trails in a custom Salesforce app, then writers commit their content to Git, and then our current build system does magic and our release managers are alerted of any issues. If all goes well, then about once a week you all enjoy new badges to gain new skills and grow your careers. It takes a lot of people a lot of time, energy, and Trailheart to pull ..read more

How to Send Google and Outlook Calendar Invite Links in Email Templates
Douglas C. Ayers – My journey with Salesforce and Technology

Many years ago, before the modern age of using online calendars provided by products like G-Suite and Office 365, I blogged about how to send calendar invites as attachments using Visualforce email templates. The solution worked ok at the time for my company. Back then, we didn’t use online calendar programs, but rather had Microsoft Outlook installed on our desktop machines. We were able from our inbox to open the .ics attachment in Outlook and it implicitly understood how to add it to the calendar. But times have changed. And although the need for sending calendar invites through email rema ..read more

How to Declaratively Handle with Flow When Files are Shared to Records
Douglas C. Ayers – My journey with Salesforce and Technology

Recently I was talking with Michelle Hansen who had the use case that she’d like to run a Flow when a file is shared to a record. Naturally, she explored options with Process Builder and saw that the ContentDocumentLink object (which links a file to a record) wasn’t supported. Womp womp. Previously I’ve blogged about workarounds to the limitation that ContentDocumentLink, ContentDocument, and ContentVersion objects are not supported in Process Builder to monitor for record changes. Please vote for Terence Chiu’s idea to encourage Salesforce to add this support. Not to be deterred, Mic ..read more

Develop Against Any Org with Visual Studio Code Tasks
Douglas C. Ayers – My journey with Salesforce and Technology

I’m a big fan of Salesforce DX, particularly Salesforce CLI and scratch orgs. As the Salesforce Extensions for Visual Studio Code matures, I’ve been doing more development in that editor for my projects at work and quick proof of concepts. I still highly support and use IlluminatedCloud plugin for IntelliJ for my open source projects because I prefer the richness of that IDE, its intellisense, and ease of issuing SOQL queries or running anonymous Apex. But I digress. New to Salesforce DX? Learn on Trailhead with the Quick Start: Salesforce DX project. New to Visual Studio Code? Learn on Trail ..read more

Trailhead Wearables
Douglas C. Ayers – My journey with Salesforce and Technology

Trailhead, the big idea that fundamentally changed how Trailblazers learn, has been met with profound enthusiasm from the #SalesforceOhana. It’s one of the reasons that drew me to join the team in 2018. But it’s not all just about hard work, empowerment, and career growth, Trailhead is also the fun way to learn! It’s also the fun way to dress, as trailblazers Chris Duarte, Kristi Pallack Brown, Chuck Liddell, and Daniel Ballinger (and many others!) have shown us with their bedazzling projects to decorate everything from shoes, hats, buttons, and sashes to 3D printables and body ..read more
