Pact (Prison Advice and Care Trust) is asking supporters to join the charity at the Annual Advent Carol Services in support of prisoners and their children and families. This year, as many as 100,000 children will be spending Christmas without their mum or dad - because one of their parents is in prison. As well as the emotional pressure, families of prisoners often experience financial hardship. Pact welcomes new measures in King’s Speech

The King’s Speech, published today, 7 November 2023, contains a series of new bills that affect prisons and the criminal justice system. The new measures include: A presumption that people sentenced to less than a year in prison will serve their sentence in the community; An extension to the early release scheme for lower-risk prisoners. David was sentenced to two years in prison, leaving behind his 3 year old daughter Maisy. Before going to prison, David had played an active role in Maisy’s life; he loved taking her to play group and watching her laugh and play with her friends. He really enjoyed being a Dad, but he was worried that now he was in prison he would no longer be able to be in Maisy’s life.
