Review: A New Production of ‘The Wiz’ Brings Oz Back to Broadway
Village Voice
by R.C. Baker
15h ago
Opening on Broadway in 1975, The Wiz was a Black retelling of L. Frank Baum’s 1900 book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, which was adapted by William F. Brown with a score by Charlie Smalls. The slap-happy result didn’t wipe away memories of the classic 1939 movie, but the show became a Tony-winning hit for its mixture of humor, heart, and catchy tunes, like the rollicking “Ease On Down the Road” and the plaintive ballad “Home.” The story of misfits being sent on a wild adventure that brings out virtues they didn’t realize they already had took on a special appeal with characters whose color ..read more

The Sympathizer (HBO/Max)   A spy known simply as the Captain attempts to play both sides of the Vietnam War, but in Max’s adaptation of Viet Thanh Nguyen’s Pulitzer Prize–winning novel, The Sympathizer, his loyalties are as blurred as the politics that surround the conflict itself. Created by acclaimed director Park Chan-wook and writer Don McKellar, the story of a Communist turncoat is transformed into a compelling series about self-identity, with a commentary on the atrocities of war. A complex narrative told through the POV of an unnamed half-Vietnamese, half-Caucasian Tro ..read more

For The Love of Scarlett and Rhett – Turner Classic Movies Turns 30
Village Voice
by Michele Stueven

It was in April of 1994 that a rambunctious rabble-rousing media mogul named Ted Turner, husband to Jane Fonda at the time, launched Turner Classic Movies (TCM) at a Times Square celebration surrounded by Hollywood legends and former Hollywood Reporter columnist Robert Osborne. A movie buff from Atlanta whose favorite film was Gone with the Wind, Turner bought MGM’s library of 2,200 films made before 1986. For the same man who launched CNN and was the owner of the Atlanta Braves among countless other projects, TCM was perhaps the closest to his heart. And as it turns ..read more

Molly Miller revels in Prince
Village Voice
by Brett Callwood

Molly Miller: I was in the midst of finals in my last semester at USC getting my bachelor’s in Studio/Jazz Guitar when Prince blew my mind. I saw him in May of 2011 during his Welcome 2 tour, which included 21 nights at The Forum in Inglewood, one of which I was lucky enough to see.  I had spent four years, not to mention the decade before, studying guitar, but I had never really dug into Prince. I was in complete awe. I remember I kept saying, “Prince is the best guitarist in the world.” Not only was he a master of guitar, but also an impeccable singer, musician, songwriter, bandleader ..read more

Christeene: Fabulous Filth and Fury
Village Voice
by R.C. Baker

Transcendent, transgressive, triumphant, Christeene strides across the stage until she’s head-to-head with vocal powerhouse Peaches, the pair luminescent with love, fury, and fishnets as they duet on Sinéad O’Connor’s “Troy.” The location might be the genteel-ish City Winery, but the scene onstage and in the audience is pure Lower East Side, an Andy Warhol’s Factory meets NYC’s ’80s/’90s club kids mashup: fabulous, decadent, and genderqueer. The crowd coalesced for the first of two shows of “The Lion the Witch and the Cobra,” NYC-based Christeene’s production of O’Connor’s potent 1987 d ..read more

Review: ‘Civil War’ is Too Civil for Today’s Reality
Village Voice
by R.C. Baker

Alex Garland’s Civil War poses a big question: What if American democracy shattered into a million pieces and citizens were forced to fight the government for our basic rights? If you’ve been watching the news, you’ll realize it’s not a farfetched concept. Written and directed by Garland with an artistry that combines the documentarian grit of Costa-Gavras (Z, Missing) with the keen eye of Steven Soderbergh, Garland’s craftsmanship has an undeniable power that will force one to ask if America isn’t so different from other countries that have engaged in warfare to wrestle back power ..read more

Flamingosis Knows Exactly “What You Won’t Do For Love”
Village Voice
by Brett Callwood

Flamingosis: One of the best R&B/Funk albums from front to back. What You Won’t Do For Love is obviously the biggest hit, but every track on this is a bop. Soulful, catchy, groovy, and heartfelt all the way through. There’s a reason why so many other artists like 2Pac, Common, J Dilla, Biggie, etc. have sampled his melodic work.  I also sampled it on my own tune “Down For The Third Time” on my Pleasure Palette album. RIP to Bobby Caldwell, one of the greatest ever.   [In addition,] I listened to Reality Testing by Lone when I was still in colleg ..read more
