In handing down the 2024 Pulitzer Prizes, on May 6, the Pulitzer Prize Board responsible for selecting recipients of the most prestigious awards in journalism, literature, and musical composition made an astonishing announcement, which as of this writing is still sending shockwaves through prim newsrooms across the country: It had honored the late Village Voice writer and cultural critic Greg Tate with a “Special Citation.”
I knew Tate well enough to postulate with soulful conviction that he isn’t glad-handing and rolling around in his grave (gravitas, maybe) about it. Not that he’d be ..read more

He’s just a guy, staring at a girl, telling her that he loves her. Well, he’s actually a musician who sells out arenas, but the Notting Hill adage still applies. True love transcends stardom, class or race. It doesn’t matter how different people are — as long as they love each other, their relationship can overcome a tornado of difference. Anne Hathaway, the rom-com star of such classics as The Princess Diaries, is just the person to deliver this wonderful message, and her latest entry in the genre, The Idea of You, is a kismet connection of star and source material.

While major tech giants scramble to make the next big leap in artificial intelligence, Nam Kim, CEO of Artificial Consciousness Tech, Inc., has quietly made a breakthrough that could redefine how machines interact with humans.
Kim’s patented technology enables artificial intelligence to process and understand language that closely mirrors human consciousness, allowing a more natural and intuitive human-machine interaction. “Everyone is looking for a way to make AI more relatable and easier to interact with,” Kim explains. “Our technology interprets language and understands context and emotion ..read more

Evil Does Not Exist is as compelling and impenetrable as its title. Japanese auteur Ryûsuke Hamaguchi’s follow-up to his international breakout hit, Drive My Car, is a slow, creeping thing — a small story that begins modestly and swells into something grand and ominous. (It took home two prizes at the Venice International Film Festival last year.)
The story follows Takumi (Hitoshi Omika), who serves his mountainous village as the local odd-job man. The camera watches intently as he chops wood cleanly and efficiently, adding the logs to a neat pile on the side of his alpine home. His young daug ..read more

Nobody Loves a Genius Child
I did not, when a slave, understand the deep meaning of those rude and apparently incoherent songs. I was myself within the circle; so that I neither saw nor heard as those without might see and hear. They told a tale of woe which was then altogether beyond my feeble comprehension… I have often been utterly astonished, since I came to the north, to find persons who could speak of the singing, among slaves, as evidence of their contentment and happiness… The singing of a man cast away upon a desolate island might be as appropriately considered as evidence of contentm ..read more

Hardcore? I can’t use it. Not even if we talking Sex Pistols. ‘Cause inner city blues make me wanna holler open up the window it’s too funky in here. And shit like that. Or rhythms to that effect. But listening to the Sex Pistols is like listening to a threat against your child, your wife, your whole way of life: You either take it very seriously or you don’t take it at all. Depends on whether or not you’re truly black or white I guess. Or so I thought. Because never mind the Sex Pistols, here come something for the ass. Namely, the Bad Brains. Baddest hardcore band in the land, living or dead ..read more

Jagwar Twin: The truth is that I don’t have a favorite album and it’ll change from day to day. But if you asked me at the moment, the first thing that comes to my mind right now is Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers by Kendrick Lamar because I think Kendrick is saying things that need to be said in our culture. I think he’s one of the only people who isn’t afraid to just speak what he feels and do it in an artful and tasteful way. I’ve probably listened to that album 100 times.

He’s more than just Ken. Following his Oscar-nominated role as Barbie’s boyfriend, Ryan Gosling keeps the same blond streaks and the same dumb-blond charisma but is asked to be a little more serious in The Fall Guy, giving him a chance to display a range of comedy to drama reminiscent of Cary Grant. Gosling plays Colt Seavers, a stuntman, which means he’s got more to worry about than just Beach (though, like the character played by Brad Pitt was described in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, he’s “pretty for a stunt guy”). Colt has got a career of back-breaking feats to deal with, doubling ..read more

Last fall, a neighbor accosted me in our building’s elevator to rave about a PBS “Great Performances” special, in which a group of British dancers told a story using remixed performances of some of Sting’s greatest hits. That program, Message in a Bottle, had been in development for several years. As a stage show it took London by storm in 2019, winning Olivier Award nominations for director/choreographer Kate Prince and her troupe, ZooNation. Advertised as an “extraordinary dance show,” it’s now playing at New York City Center; savvy watchers in the house have suggested that this ..read more
