Bronx Community Board 11 Chair Bernadette Ferrara and Vice Chair Al D’Angelo were officially booted from their positions Thursday night, after being at odds with fellow board members and the office of Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson for months. In a statement posted to social media on April 25, Ferrara said her removal was “all about [manipulation,] power and taking over the community board, starting with public defamation of character.” CB11’s full board meeting agenda on April 25 paved the way for the oustings with a motion item scheduled on whether or not they should remain chair and ..read more

Op-ed | Will New York’s housing deal do more harm than good?
amNewYork
by Jason Sorens

The legislature and Gov. Kathy Hochul made a deal on housing as part of the budget. The package would likely mean housing costs for New Yorkers will go up, not down. Ideologues on the left and tenant organizations–which don’t actually represent tenants–want to extend rent regulation, misleadingly called “good-cause eviction,” statewide. The deal will extend it to all New York City apartments. This policy is really just rent control under a different name. It also makes housing providers “guilty until proven innocent” when they need to evict bad tenants, causing them to pass on their losses to ..read more

Columbia University’s week-long protests took a chaotic turn Thursday when pro-Israel and pro-Palestine demonstrators clashed as tensions over the college encampments in New York City reached a fever pitch. For many, the now over week-long protest at Columbia University has become a symbol. While some see it as a peaceful stand against war, others it is a representation of antisemitism and terror. The conflicting viewpoints came to a head on April 25 when about a thousand Israel proponents, led by conservative Christian singer and activist Sean Feucht, marched toward the campus and met on 116t ..read more

Bernie Williams was in the center, just like the old days at Yankee Stadium. Only this time he was at Lincoln Center alongside conductor Gustavo Dudamel and making his New York Philharmonic debut. After spending 16 years gaining fame while roaming the grass where Joe DiMaggio and Mickey Mantle once trod, Williams was on the stage made famous by Leonard Bernstein and where guitar great Andrés Segovia once played. Williams performed “Moving Forward,” a jazz-infused work he composed in 2009 that was newly arranged by Jeff Tyzik as part of the orchestra’s spring gala on Wednesday night at David Ge ..read more

Two mistakes by Nestor Cortes doomed the Yankees’ 3-1 loss to the Oakland Athletics on Thursday night at Yankee Stadium. After 1-2-3 first and second innings, Cortes gave up a home run to Nick Allen and a two-run shot to Tyler Nevin in the third inning which created a deficit too great for the Yankees to get out of. Despite those two blips, Cortes went 7.0 innings, allowing thosest three runs on five hits while striking out four. Dennis Santana and Victor Gonzalez both put up scoreless innings apiece out of the bullpen, but the Yankees’ offense sputtered all night, leaving runners in scoring p ..read more

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Joel Embiid is suffering from Bell’s palsy and played Game 3 with a bulky knee brace to sturdy the 7-footer after dealing with injuries all season. The lingering effects of the time off from his most recent knee surgery s ucked him into a depression — and that was before Embiid was hit with a form of facial paralysis. Embiid pushed aside the pain — mental and physical — and embraced the pressure after he vowed the 76ers were “going to win this series” against the New York Knicks. Embiid scored 50 points, making all four 3-point attempts and scoring 18 in ..read more
