Hello, I am a soon to be graduate with a bachelor’s in Sociology and I do plan to get a master’s degree but I want to get started somewhere. Honestly, I feel totally ill equipped and discouraged as I have no clue where to look. Everything I see on Indeed asks for experience, which I expect for most fields right now but knowing this can be a more challenging one, I’m lost. Really I just need advice on what to do, so anyone has any insight into where I should be looking or what you’d recommend as a master’s degree please let me know. Anything is appreciated. submitted by /u/somanyraisins [visi ..read more

Are there any ways for developed countries to fix birthrates in XXI?

There are no developed countries with a fertility rate above 2.1 by 2024. The only exception is Israel (2.8), but as a very new state, it undergoes all the processes weirdly, and its TFR falls rapidly, too (3.0 in 2016, -0.2 in 8y). Many politicians make bold claims about how to fix it, but are there any real examples? As I see it, not roleplaying as conservative (like Poland) nor having a "non-western" culture/religion (like Japan or UAE) will help. Best life standards with great social guarantees (like Scandinavian countries) aren't working either. As far as I understand, it's all about dem ..read more

Is there a name for this?

Howdy, layperson here! Is there a term for the phenomenon where the importance of things declines over time? Perhaps the most relatable example is Pearl Harbor, once a date that will live in infamy, but it seems today the importance of noting the anniversary has subsided with survivors of the attack almost all deceased and newer generations being further away from the date and possibly their school curriculum puts a different emphasis on American history. Do you think there is a different stigmatization of refugees? For example, that refugees from Europe experience a different stigmatization than those from the Middle East? submitted by /u/Strange-Industry-625 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Can a social scientist create a research topic based on his own experience? Or should the subject of research be external? What do you think? submitted by /u/bizkaybolduk [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Hi! I am a sociology student and an doing a capstone project for one of my classes regarding sociology and families in a changing society. I have a few research questions that I would like some feedback on to get some real world examples to present within in my project. I will include the questions below and if you your up for it please answer as many as you can. If I use something from your response I would need to include you in my bibliography so please keep that in mind. I am open for any type of discussion on this topic or insight into this relationship. i’ve only very recently started getting curious about sociology and what type of content it has to offer if you study it. i previously thought it was mainly a study of social behaviour and how certain factors affect societies, for example, cultures creating different social pressures on different groups of people. when i started digging deeper (aka searching on youtube) i started finding that a lot of it just sounds like philosophy/ more philosophical. maybe i’m on the wrong side of social media or sociology just incorporates philosophical ideas in its studies? if anybody can let me know what ..read more
