So I created some spoon blanks with an axe and started carving with knife and thought I’d try to keep the wood wet by putting in a box with shavings. Unfortunately the unfinished spoons are now green with mold.
Whilst I’ll probably never use for eating and was quite fond of the design I finished it off but wondering if anyone has found a good way odd removing the green mold. (It’s running right through the wood btw so no way to carve away)

Found a small piece of fresh-cut lilac left behind by a trail maintenance crew clearing non-native species. Some observations after working with it:
Color fades quickly: When I first opened it up, there were beautiful streaks of violet and purple. These turn to brown very quickly--like within minutes of being exposed to air. I just carved plum for the first time a few months ago, and the similar color streaks have not faded.
It's hard AF: I spend more time whittling figures from air-dried hardwood than I do spoons from green wood. I routinely work with dry wood over 1000 on the Janka scale ..read more

What gives with this discoloration? Someone suggested that my hands might be leaving oils on the wood? I don’t think they’re dirty but I suppose maybe that’s what’s going on. I do keep the spoon in a bag while I’m working on it, would that cause it?

Took a local class last year to learn the basics; these are the first 3 post-class spoons I’ve made. The first two are the light-colored spoons with the steeper-sided bowls, both finished with Danish oil. The darker spoon was finished with a beeswax-mineral oil mix a friend gave me. Really enjoyed experimenting with a more shallow bowl style and finally felt comfortable not sanding it. Still having a hard time not hitting snags when the direction of the grain changes, but having fun with it.

Three cooking spoons all from the same piece of cherry, all different as the wood grain must always be observed.
