Great as a tool or a hair accessory, these projects are a cinch to shape and finish
By Keoma McCaffrey
For over two decades, I have been making combs and selling them at fairs and online, and from there they travel to households around the world. Recently, I was contacted by a woman whose mother had just passed a beloved comb, one that I had made her years ago; now that’s a real heirloom. Once you get the initial idea down, the variations are boundless. Just be careful—combs are addictive! This pattern, with its smooth, flat space at the top, makes a great canvas to either show off the gorgeou ..read more

Turn this woodland favorite into an adorable spring decoration
By Desiree Hajny
Thanks to popular media, we can’t help associating our long-eared friends with spring. I’ve had several batches of young bunnies in my backyard and always enjoy watching each one’s development from wide-eyed little creature to majestic adult. For this project, make sure not to carve off too much wood too quickly; you’ll need that volume later for the ears and tail, and to create a supple fur texture around the cheeks and ruff. After you finish this project, build yourself a custom paint rack to keep all your paints ..read more

Size this basic design to fit your workspace
By Steve Russell
Organize your paint collection with a rack made to suit your needs. This multilayered design with a clear front gets paint bottles up off the bench, moves them closer to eye level, and doesn’t take up much space. You can make it with scrap plywood and clear acrylic. If one rack isn’t big enough, make it larger or make a second rack. I made mine to allow for storage underneath, but you could make it flush on the bottom for a shorter rack. After your rack is built and your paints are organized, get to work on your next spring project ..read more

Lovespoon carver shares the story behind a traditional token of affection
By Dave Western
Throughout Europe from the early 1600s to the turn of the 20th century, it became popular for young men to make and give gifts to the young women who had captured their hearts. The most popular of these was the lavishly decorated lovespoon. It became so synonymous with courtship that the word ‘spooning’ became a popular term. Learn all about lovespoons in the article below and carve your own lovespoon with one of my spoon carving patterns!
Unfortunately, spoons carved for a decorative purpose tend to ..read more

Quick-carve holiday gift allows you to experiment with making different faces
By Larry Green
This jovial little caricature really looks great hanging on a Christmas tree. The variety of expressions you could carve for him is endless. Carve one or a forest of ornaments and create on the go by making your own personal carving desk.
Carving the Tree
Trace the pattern onto the wood and cut the outline. Taper the boughs on the front and remove any saw marks with a carving knife. Mark the bottom of the nose and the smile lines. Make stop cuts along the lines and carve up to the stop cuts to ..read more

These cookie-sized classics are sweeter than dessert
By Tom Noller
If you live in Texas, like me, you don’t get to see much snow. So, I decided to make my own. These small snowflakes are fun for beginners since they only use two- and three-sided chips. They are great as ornaments or for decorating winter projects, such as centerpieces and Christmas gifts.
Getting Started
Prepare your blanks. Sand them smooth with 220-grit sandpaper. This will allow a smooth transfer of the patterns to the wood and minimize irregularities as you carve the patterns. Transfer the patterns by your method of cho ..read more
