This piece I found on the Susquehanna River just south of Sidney, NY, where a fallen Sycamore tree left its roots exposed.  Even as  I watched a bald eagle being attacked by a blueJay on the opposite shore, I balanced on the front tip of my canoe and brushed away thick spider webs to saw off the root pieces that had stone in them. October 2011: This piece was my first attempt at mosaic relief carving.  I carved a pine board into the shape above and then sanded it down before "tiling" it.  Rather than apply tiles and grout to the surface, I relief-carved the tiles onto the surface by removing the space between the "tiles" .  In other words, the tiles are just the surface of the wood with paint on them.  My wife and I painted each "tile" one by one.  Shellac gives them a shine similar to real ceramic tiles.   Pine and acrylic.  5 ..read more

Recently I have tried to create some carvings that would serve as air plant holders.  Air plants are plants that don't require soil.  Instead, they grow without attaching to the ground, and they pull moisture from the air to survive.  I water them once a week by soaking them, and they live happily nestled into nooks and crannies of my carvings.
