Part II in our series on Segmented Woodturning – which was put together by Jim Whattam and Scott Whishart – is now available on our YouTube channel. In Part II, Jim builds on the skills covered in Part I by designing and building a fully segmented bowl, shown in the photo above. There will be particular emphasis on fence adjustments to get accurate segment lengths and techniques for gluing-up stacks of rings to obtain accurate joint alignment.
Also, a detailed guide that covers everything Jim presents during the demo is available as a free download in PDF format!

Last week, Cindy Drozda hosted a remote demo for our Chapter. Prior to the event, I set up a simple system that allowed people to register and pay for the demo in advance. This worked really well, and several other Chapter officers asked how I set it up. Always a firm believer in documenting your work, I decided to put together a detailed write-up on how I set it up. It describes two methods that I came up with to accomplish the task. I believe the first method is better, but the second method works too. Pros and cons of each are discussed.
The system I put in place:

The AAW Grant Committee approved the grant request for 3 Jet lathes submitted by member Heather Handler with the help of Tom Sloan and Eric Krum. The 3 lathes come with a set of turning tools and accessories. The tools will arrive in June 2020 and be installed at the Mount Pleasant Technical High School. This will give the students 6 lathes to turn on. This is the second grant the AAW has approved for the First State Woodturners chapter. The first grant was for a single Jet lathe.

During our June meeting, member Scott Wishart gave a very informative presentation on casting and turning resins. He discussed the different types of resins he’s experimented with, and explained their advantages and disadvantages. He described and showed us different coloring agents, molds, and other equipment needed. Scott also brought in his pressure pot, which is a modified commercially available paint tank.
Scott started out making wood/resin hybrid pen blanks, and then experimented with making blanks and patches for bowls, and eventually began making his distinctive burl/resin Star Wars ..read more

First State Woodturners members collaborated with faculty and staff at Mt. Pleasant High School, Wilmington, Delaware to teach woodturning to students over a three week period in April. Nine of our members volunteered their time, tools, wood, and lathes to teach six classes of students how to turn a bowl from start to finish.
The classes proved so popular with students that many of them went on to turn a second bowl, box, or goblet while we were there. Some students even made their way back to the shop during free time, study halls, and lunch breaks to work on their projects.
In all, over 80 ..read more

He is the Vice President and Program Director for Central Virginia Woodturners. Mike’s work encompasses a variety of forms, from utilitarian bowls, boxes, and platters to natural-edge bowls to sculptural cairn boxes, Spirit Birds, and other geometric forms.
Mike presented his “Big Air Turning” demonstration for us. This type of turning involves large “winged” shapes, such as diamonds, triangles, and squares. Mike starte ..read more
