Worked with a friend to design this white oak vanity for their bathroom remodel. They wanted an open vanity with baskets for storage. The turned legs was my excuse to learn to use the skew. The skew is a tricky, but powerful tool! submitted by /u/dafigzz [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Preferred finish for a large hybrid (resin / wood) piece

I know this must be a basic question but some cursory searching here and /finish hasn’t yield any specific results: What is the most common finish / technique to use for large projects that are a resin / wood hybrid that you want a gloss finish on? Something like a bowl or vase. I’ve seen several discussions on pens and they invariably lead to CA finishes. I’m not comfortable doing a CA finish on a large piece and was wondering if there was another option. Watching YouTube videos of people turning these types of projects, they always show a final ‘wipe’ of something (usually yellow liquid on ..read more

New and have a question!

Hey all! Just got my first lathe a few days ago, and am very excited! However, I notice that my lathe is one where you have to screw the wood to this holder, unlike the ones I see on YouTube that act like a claw and hold it in place without leaving screw holes in the wood. Is there any way to make mine so it has the claw? If not, how should I approach projects knowing I could carve into a nail? submitted by /u/No-Pack5020 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

How long to dry and what to seal?

Hi I’m just getting into turning and I’m not sure where to start. I have a nice log of elder maple that I’m drying out right now. I’m wondering how long I should leave it to dry, what happens if I turn it while the moisture content is too high and once I turn it what’s the best thing to use to seal it. I hear coconut oil is better then linseed but I’m not sure if that’s wood dependent. submitted by /u/it-be-like-dat-doe [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

I’m trying to find any wood turners in the Portland Oregon area who might want to purchase some of it. It’s also black light reactive. Which is awesome. submitted by /u/stonecrow512 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more
