The C-suite are still obsessed with benchmarks – we get it, comparing ourselves to others is natural. We want to see how we stack up against the competition to understand how we are performing. And this is often the case when it comes to the world of employee experience and engagement. Benchmarking is not without its problems, BUT if you understand the limitations and don’t get too hung up the numbers and comparisons, it can be a useful tool. You just need to know how to clear the fog around the numbers and get a crystal-clear perspective on what really works. Introducing Our 2024 Employee Exp ..read more

From Rockstar Dreams to People Lab: My Unconventional Career Journey

I don’t know about you, but I never really had a grand career plan. I chose my A levels purely based on my O level performance (yep I am that old)…. It turned out that A level French was a big step up (i.e. it was tough), so a couple of weeks in I decided to swap to psychology, based purely on the fact that my good friend Alex said it was quite interesting! And so began my love of the subject. I then chose it for my degree based on nothing more than fact that I enjoyed it – but had no idea what I might end up doing with it. Fast forward a few years, and on graduating in 1993, there were very f ..read more

It’s national storytelling week… but it’s not all about fairy tales or the latest thrillers –beyond traditional manuals and presentations, organisations are recognising the impact that well-crafted stories can have on employee experience and engagement – from conveying values, role-modelling behaviours, and getting people ‘on board’ with a strategic narrative…to name just a few! Using stories to ‘show, not tell’ Storytelling is an underrated (and often underused) way for organisations to get people to adopt values and behaviours. Using a ‘show’ rather than ‘tell’ method of what is expected in ..read more

There are certain newsletters that arrive in your inbox and always get read.  For me it’s the ‘Provoked’ newsletter from the brilliant Todd Kashdan (follow him on LinkedIn and subscribe to Provoked while you’re there). The heading caught my eye: “Niceness sucks – the sugar coated plague” I had an immediate reaction to it – being nice definitely does not suck! I’ve based my whole parenting approach around telling my kids to ‘just be nice’. But the clue is in the title – Todd’s newsletter is called ‘Provoked’, and it often does, which is why I enjoy reading it. But as a polite, well-mannere ..read more

Yep, I’m talking about the Post Office scandal again. I came across a brilliant blog from David Halpern who is President and Founding Director of the Behavioural Insights Team (BIT). In it, he turns his attention to Fujitsu and the Horizon IT system purchased from them by the PO, and highlights that essentially it was not fit for purpose. He explains that well-meaning legislation put in place to ensure fair and transparent procurement for large contracts, has actually had the opposite effect. In summary, past performance of suppliers could not be shared when tendering for a new piece of work ..read more
