Jurrien Timber marked his return from injury this week with an outstanding goal from left-back for the U23s at Ewood Park. As any sensible person knew when he injured his ACL in August, this campaign was always going to be limited to a few cameos in the dying embers of the season for Timber. An absolute beauty from Timber Tune in LIVE on https://t.co/l2yjijDAhy #AFCU21 | #PL2 pic.twitter.com/ORnISJtYrO — Arsenal Academy (@ArsenalAcademy) April 22, 2024 Arsenal fans should not expect anything significant from Timber this season but his return does invite curiosity as to what his role would ..read more

Morning all. I watched last night’s Merseyside derby more in hope than expectation – after all, the last time Everton beat Liverpool at home was October 17th 2010, when a certain Mikel Arteta scored their second goal in a 2-0 win. I don’t watch Liverpool enough to know if this was completely atypical of them, but they had 76% possession, took 23 shots to Everton’s 16, but never looked quite as dangerous as you would expect. Darwin Nunez missed a great chance in the first half, but beyond that there was a lot of stout defending (I don’t think I’ve ever seen as many stooping defensive headers i ..read more

Welcome to another episode of the Arsecast – the Arsenal podcast. In this episode I’m joined by Andrew Allen to look back to Arsenal’s 5-0 demolition of Chelsea on Tuesday night. We chat about the quick opening goal which made Anne Hathaway happy, the red card Chelsea should have had, and missed chances from the Gunners. We also look at how we were more solid in the second half, with two goals from Kai Havertz and Ben White – with the former Chelsea man celebrating his strikes with gusto. There’s discussion of how Havertz has grown into this team, the Martin Odegaard performance, the signific ..read more

Arsenal 5-0 Chelsea: Odegaard pulls the strings as Gunners destroy hapless blues

Match report – Player ratings – Arteta reaction – Video Arsenal moved 4 points clear of Man City (3 of Liverpool) at the top of the table after demolishing a hapless Chelsea 5-0 last night – our biggest ever win against them. Mikel Arteta made a couple of changes to his side, starting Takehiro Tomiyasu at left-back, and handing a surprise start to Thomas Partey in midfield. It didn’t take long for those to take effect, nice build-up play saw Declan Rice drive on and play the ball outside him for Leandro Trossard. The Belgian took a touch and absolutely drilled a shot between the keeper and the ..read more

Morning. We’re in Premier League action tonight, hosting Chelsea as we look to follow up the win against Wolves with three more points tonight. The challenge for Mikel Arteta and his players isn’t just an opposition side who aren’t as bad as they were earlier in the season when they held us to a 2-2 draw, but the physical demands with the game coming so soon after the last one. To be fair, that’s something Chelsea have to manage as well, having lost an FA Cup semi-final to Man City on Saturday evening, and tonight might be about who copes best with that. Obviously heavy legs could be a factor ..read more

Welcome to another Arsecast Extra, the Arsenal podcast, with myself and James from @gunnerblog. In this episode we look back on the 2-0 win at Wolves on Saturday evening which put us back on top of the Premier League. We discuss how Arsenal had to dig deep after a difficult week, but put in a performance that belied the tired legs, despite the fact we had to wait until late to seal the three points. We chat about Leandro Trossard’s goal, whether Wolves should have had a red card, David Raya’s excellent save, and how Mikel Arteta asked a lot of key men like Odegaard, Rice and Saka and how they ..read more

VAR: What is it good for? Absolutely nothing …

Morning all. It’s been quite the weekend and yesterday we almost had the joy of one of the funniest results of all time. Manchester United, 3-0 up on Coventry in the 71st minute of the FA Cup semi-final at Wembley, let that lead slip, conceding three goals to send the game into extra-time. Then, right at the death, it looked as if Coventry had won it, only for the goal to be disallowed for an offside in the build-up. I mean, they said it was offside, and they drew the lines and everything, but this is the least convincing offside I’ve ever seen. I think we’ve all had our issues with VAR, but ..read more

Match report – Player ratings – Arteta reaction – Video Arsenal went back to the top of the Premier League last night with a 2-0 win away at Wolves. Maybe it wasn’t the best performance of the season, but at this point it’s so much more about getting it done, not how you get it done. To be fair though, the fact it was 1-0 right until the death probably played a part in how we felt about the overall display. Without the cushion of another goal (or two), you’re always vulnerable to a moment that could cost you points, and that level of jeopardy unquestionably informed sentiment about how we play ..read more
