The post Last minute battle over Rwanda appeared first on Anglican Mainstream. Right up until the last minute Bishops of the C ofE were trying to fight the Safety of Rwanda Bill in spite of an earlier commitment by the Archbishop of Canterbury that it was time to bow to the seniority of the House of Commons. The two bishops were the Bishop of Chelmsford and the Bishop of Derby who voted in favour of an amendment tabled by Lord Anderson of Ipswich which would stipulate that the secretary of state must consult a monitoring committee to verify the ongoing safety of Rwanda. The post Eastern Europe is Showing Britain Up on Free Speech appeared first on Anglican Mainstream. by Štěpán Hobza, The Daily Sceptic: When Roger Scruton arrived in Czechoslovakia in 1979, he found himself helping many teachers “who had been forbidden to teach” and “students who had been forbidden to learn”. He was obviously aware he was travelling to a country which under the cover of “people’s democracy” suppressed people’s views and punished any form of dissent. Still, he was amazed by how palpable the lack of freedom actually felt, and the extent to which it “invaded and poisoned relatio ..read more

The post Inside the blood-soaked prison wars between Muslim and white gangs appeared first on Anglican Mainstream. by Chris Atkins, Daily Mail: I’ve seen toothbrushes turned into knives and am haunted by the screams of victims who had sugar and boiling water thrown in their face. One of my most memorable encounters as a former jailbird was with ‘Ali’, a notorious gangster whom I met days after he was released from a high security prison. He’d just completed several long sentences for firearms offences and serious violence. We’d become connected through a mutual friend who was one of Ali’s nei ..read more

The post Anti-Israel bigots do not own our streets appeared first on Anglican Mainstream. by Mark Birkbeck, spiked: Why we need to counter-protest against the ‘pro-Palestine’ marches. Since the 7 October pogrom, there have been regular marches across the UK, organised by the Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC) and the Stop the War Coalition, calling for an unconditional ceasefire and an arms embargo against Israel. Both demands amount to the same thing: for Israel to surrender to Hamas and so risk suffering a repeat of 7 October. This isn’t hyperbole. Hamas worked for half a decade to create ..read more

The post A sound of Rowling thunder appeared first on Anglican Mainstream. by Helen Joyce, Artillery Row: Scotland’s government and police seem determined to turn themselves into a laughing stock. “Do not ask for credit, as refusal often offends.” This sign was common in my childhood, when many shopkeepers hung it behind the till in the hope of heading off unreasonable requests before they caused unnecessary conflict. It’s a principle that would have stood Scotland’s government in good stead when designing its new hate crime law, which passed in 2021 but came into force on 1 April this year ..read more

The post New York Times: ‘trans women are not biological men’ appeared first on Anglican Mainstream. by Joan Smith, UnHerd: It’s one of those unfathomable mysteries. Generations of athletes have been segregated by sex, with men’s times consistently faster than the women’s. Now it turns out that the whole thing was unnecessary, because a new study suggests that a bunch of unfit men don’t have much advantage over women who exercise regularly. I mean, really? So it would seem. “New study bolsters idea of athletic differences between men and trans women,” the New York Times announced. Not between ..read more
