Precocious Neophyte : Stony
Korean Indie

Two years after Home in the Desert, Precocious Neophyte returns with Stony, a five-song EP. With so many years of experience, I was already sure that Stony would be a step forward. But there’s a bigger difference than expected. Stony sounds more confident, in both the recording and mixing, along with the performance. Stony’s five songs are the next chapter in Precocious Neophyte’s journey. The songs on Home in the Desert were a tentative return to music and Stony is the blossom of those seeds. “Maum” was a pre-release single which served more as the transition between the releases. It’s a goo ..read more

MOMENTSYUMI : Starlight MOMENTSYUMI has transitioned through multiple genres with all of her singles. This latest, “Starlight,” is a moody and melancholy indie rock track. It feels a little different from her other singles and older releases she had but I really want an EP or full length. Instagram | Official Website | YouTube | Bandcamp | Apple Music | Spotify | YouTube Music Neontype : Nostalgia According to Spotify, Neontype is an “electronic fusion project.” Nostalgia is a two-song single with a full length expected in late June. The music has that ambient electronic composition where it ..read more

Elephant in a fridge : Elephant in fridge
Korean Indie

Elephant in a fridge sent an email before the official release of their self-titled EP. At the time, the shared link of songs was out of order so I didn’t know how the EP would play out. Now after listening to both the songs as a set and ordered in the EP, Elephant in a fridge definitely shows off their influences and music tastes on the debut. “I think I love you” is an indie pop, indie rock, and synth pop 80s throwback. The melodies are all accented with a synth tone and I didn’t see a keyboard in the album notes, meaning the synth sounds are a heavily processed guitar. That shows a lot of ..read more

HUNJIYA Premieres MV for “tourguide” and Returns to Independence
Korean Indie

Some people may not know but way back in the day, HUNJIYA emailed me about her first EP, Lineage. Since then I have followed her career and listened, if not reviewed, most of the longer releases. She has evolved and grown a lot since those early days and I thought KHAMAI would have been the start of mainstream media following her more. But as expected, the album was used and forgotten for the next shiny thing, HUNJIYA completed her contract and has returned to her independent roots. The first song in this current chapter is “tourguide.” And we’re here to help premiere it. Like all of HUNJIYA’s ..read more

hanbee : days months years It’s interesting that I found hanbee through BLEE, but now hanbee has established herself as a soloist. I haven’t kept up with all the release and “days months years” is an indie pop track that’s pretty much a perfect example of the genre. Instagram | YouTube | Apple Music | Spotify | YouTube Music Hoochus : Into My Blue World I feel like I’ve heard of or heard music by Hoochus before but I can’t place it. “Into My Blue World” is a good indie rock track with a bit of country spice. It’s laid back and easy to get into. Insta ..read more

Dajung (다정) : Unlearn
Korean Indie

It’s been three years since Dajung reemerged with Jay Knife after closing her early years as j.knife. Jay Knife collected the songs during that era and it was a strong chapter in her music journey. She’s participated in various work over the years but I was always curious if she would release music under her name again. And suddenly Unlearn released. The four song EP is a clear presentation of growth. Dajung has absorbed so much more in technique, style, tone, and composition. But she hasn’t thrown away the foundation of her music. Now there are a lot more deliberate steps forward and less he ..read more

Min.a : are you watching at all?
Korean Indie
by Madi

When min.a first began dropping hints about are you watching at all? I was immediately excited. The 5-song EP was going to feature a combination of English and Korean lyrics and explore a different, more mature side of min.a while maintaining her unique style. And that holds true — despite shifting into different genres across songs and expressing herself in two languages, are you watching at all? still sounds unmistakably min.a. Present are her usual emotionally raw lyrics and complexly layered soundscapes, now through the lenses of different genres than her signature glittery synth-pop. The ..read more

Gakkeum Project : don’t disturb the clouds don’t disturb the clouds by Gakkeum Project is a light and mellow introduction. The duo has created a familiar and engaging single. Instagram | YouTube | Apple Music | Spotify | YouTube Music Ghost Bookstore : Children with Starry Blood Ghost Bookstore fills a gap of brooding emo shoegaze melodic rock. “Children with Starry Blood” is great. Instagram | Apple Music | Spotify | YouTube Music Electric Planet Five : Air I have unfortunately missed out on Electric Planet Five for a long time. Even though I’ve listened to various singles and albums, I d ..read more

Sailor Honeymoon : Sailor Honeymoon
Korean Indie

Sailor Honeymoon‘s Sailor Honeymoon shows high levels of talent and ability. There’s also a big push on “feel” instead of precision. It’s strange that the Bandcamp release is missing “Tofu is $1” though (as of 5/3/2024). To me, Sailor Honeymoon is an artistic exploration of the rock genre and its blend of sub-genres, instead of their description of an “offering that references various sub-genres of punk past and present.” A good number of tracks were released as singles before the EP and most showed the best aspects of the band. “Bad Apple” is one of the best tracks. It’s a deliberate, grunge ..read more

GonyBand : Kiss & Hug Gonyband‘s “Kiss & Hug” is a fun rock song. It’s got a lot of energy but the tempo does feel a few beats too slow compared to the energy the song is trying to push. A good standard track in Korean rock. Instagram | Apple Music | Spotify | YouTube Music Tuesday Beach Club : Ever “Ever” sounds like an extended coda to their self-titled EP. A mellow indie rock track that captures the early morning sun or the farewell at dusk. Another taste of Tuesday Beach Club. Instagram | SoundCloud | YouTube | Apple Music | Spotify  ..read more
