In the time of pears
We poured the water
Flour makes a paste
Dancing and jumping
Excitement of youth
A new thing to touch
Two sets of hands now
Squish and twist the dough
Kitchen full of smells
In the afternoon
We pulled out the bread
Hot with rising steam
Rye is generous
It opens a door
A passage of earth
In a time of joy
We followed butter
Tunnel of flavor
Our guide is laughing
Fish and bears are here
Silver pool’s edges
Deep in the cave-home
We added apples
Raisins help them float
In the time of school
Questions for the jar
When will you finish?
The silence of caves
Hard ..read more

I am a child from nowhere, a long string of wandering ancestors trailing behind me
Some forced from their native homes long ago, some more recently
By war or economy — conquered, defeated, starved, persecuted
They carried their wounds with them where ever they went
And as is the cycle common in abuse without healing, they turned from victim to oppressor
For years, I have asked myself: where do I belong?
When one’s spirituality is a spirituality of the land, but the land doesn’t belong to you?
Ancestors who stole the land, who killed and enslaved and pillaged
And here I am, a child from nowhere ..read more

Black has wings
Today on the hill
Five times a presence
Around the gray stone
Cawing into flight
At the sound of my feet
Blue hiding
Today a day off
One expanse not seen
Still present in eyes
Awaiting a gift
The mystery revealed
Red a speck
Today at the side
Four ways to go home
Remember the night
A river of mud
Consumed the low path
Gold is small
Today on my hand
Thirteen reflections
All of them gentle
Smoothed by the morning
From a sky full of clouds
Green waiting
Today in the park
Uncountable leaves
Reaching for the mist
Maybe some raindrops
To end the months of dry
Colo ..read more

I never thought, as a child
That I’d spend my 40s
Responding to mass shootings
With making tea and coffee cake
Staring out the window at the mountains
But here we are
Our nation has thoroughly descended into stochastic terrorism
Our government’s leaders are profiting off
Others’ deaths and
Emboldening the worst
In human nature
I’m grateful for tea
For the quiet foothills
For coyote song last night that brought me
Back from the depression
I would have felt in my 20s
Whether right or wrong
I’m grateful for 20 years of meditation
That helps me to breathe in this suffering
And l ..read more

I heard a story once about a child trapped in a basement. It was told to me by many different mouths over the course of a number of years. In the story, the child is shut away down there, screaming themself horse because they are terrified and alone. The world for them is dark and scary and they lash out at it from the fight-or-flight place that gives tremendous energy for quick action, but isn’t always know for the best judgement. After all, in this story the child has been living down there in isolation for their whole life. It is really no wonder they are angry. They have lost their ability ..read more

I often discuss spirituality with others who are interested in it because it is a meaningful topic to me. I am also frequently involved in group situations where people are coming together for a ritual, a class, a meal, or another action of some type where we align our energies for a common purpose. In all of these contexts, and in online groups and forums, it is common to give blessings to one another, to the group, or to the action being undertaken. These well wishes take many forms, and most of them appear to me intuitively as innocuous at worst and actively beneficial most of the time. How ..read more

There is no denying it any longer.
Women are under siege.
Not only are we being murdered daily by the men in our lives, not only are we and our children living in situations of domestic violence, not only are our rapists not being held accountable, not only are we not believed when we have the courage to report their crimes, not only do we have to spend every moment we are alone – on the street or walking a trail or returning to our cars in parking lots or meeting someone for the first time on a date or just being in our own homes – fearful that someone will harm us, but now our g ..read more

There is so little time
In a life for
Love
I am not distracted
And forgetful
I see
Things are not rushing
By me unnoticed
I hear
I am running and dancing
As much as
I can
Yet still there is so little
Time here between
The stars
Such a small pile of
Moments to hold a
Warm hand
So few are the droplets
Falling gently on
My face
Small are the number of
Grass blades to
Lie on
How precious the touches
Of feet and
The Earth
So short are the days
I remember with
This body
I try not to waste them
There is so little time
In a life for
Love ..read more
