For many, bisexuality is not just an identity, it’s a profound experience. Whether reflecting on a person’s internal journey or navigating interpersonal relationships, identifying as bisexual signifies a declaration of choice – embracing the totality of the past, present, and future. A bisexual person’s love life is often decorated with as much duality as their relationship preferences, creating a tragically beautiful tapestry of happiness, heartbreak, comedy, tragedy, gains, losses, harmony, and dissonance. No matter which chapter your story is in, the BRC’s first official entries into Bi ..read more

Reminiscing About ABilly Jones-Hennin: A Bi+ Trailblazer

By Ellyn Ruthstrom I first met ABilly Jones-Hennin at a meeting on the Hill in Washington where LGBTQ+ leaders from around the country were being briefed on various policy initiatives during the early days of the Obama Administration. I didn’t know who he was and just assumed he was a DC-based bi person who was staying aware of the issues, maybe since he retired. Little did I know that he had been doing this for decades and I was the relative newbie. ABilly was an esteemed elder and long-time activist within both the bi+ world and within the greater LGBTQ+ movement, as well as specifically ..read more

Investing in Bisexual+ Community is the Antidote to Loneliness
Bisexual Resource Center
by River McMican

by Bailey Merlin When I started my master’s degree program at Harvard Medical School, I wanted to study the loneliness epidemic. Upon starting my research, I quickly realized that the LGBTQ+ community was more than twice as likely to experience loneliness than their heterosexual counterparts. Looking closer at the numbers, I was stunned to see how many respondents identified as bisexual. The margin was wide, which comes as no surprise now as more than half of the LGBTQ+ community identifies as bisexual. Still, I was shocked since I, a bisexual, had only met five people who also identified a ..read more

National Coming Out Day Reminds Us We Aren’t Alone

By River McMican The first time I came out, I was 13. I was sitting in a loose circle of other students in my high school cafeteria and we were doing a tolerance and diversity exercise, talking in small groups about the ways we were similar and the ways we were different. I don’t remember what I said or why I decided to say it. It wasn’t a dramatic confession, no cold sweats or anxiety, just a matter of fact statement before the surprised facilitator moved us along.  Well, whatever, I thought, it’s no big deal, and I won’t have to say it again if I don’t want to.  Ok, so. Maybe I wa ..read more

The 6 Quintessential Bi+ Experiences

It was a mere decade ago that, as I considered the differences between gay men’s music (women belting out freedom anthems + UNCE UNCE UNCE) and lesbian music (what you listen to while wistfully looking out the window at the rain), I struggled to come up with an example of “bi+ music.”  I was soon pondering the very existence of bi+ culture: what makes us, us? Are we, in fact, even a thing? Just then, a refreshing deluge of bisexual cultural signposts flooded my brain: if you prick our fingers, do we not make finger guns? If you put us in jeans, do we not cuff them? I ask you, if you of ..read more

Abortion is a Bi+ Issue

By Jen Bonardi   As if striking down Roe v. Wade wasn’t bad enough, the Dobbs Supreme Court case implied that the next judicial attack would be on LGBTQ rights. While that threat should concern the queer community, we need to understand that a ban on reproductive rights directly affects queers of all stripes, and none more than bisexuals.   When we consider the impact of abortion on the LGBTQ community, we often think of cisgender bisexuals with partners of the opposite sex. Penis-in-vagina sex is, unsurprisingly, still the most popular method of becoming pregnant. This type of sex ..read more

Celebrating Pansexual Pride

By Diane Billas I never used to tell people I was pansexual; it was just easier to say I was bi. Recently I’ve stopped this practice in favor of actually expressing how I identify. If I identify as pansexual, shouldn’t I be able to state that? And if someone doesn’t understand, it’s a good teaching opportunity. If they still don’t get it, that’s not on me.  It’s taken me a while to get to this point in my journey.   Like most people in the LGBTQ+ community, it’s been a bumpy ride to even admit that I’m a part of the LGBTQ+ community. I grew up in a small, conservative town wher ..read more

By Helen Parshall The most interesting interview I’ve ever had started with a simple question: Do you consider yourself to be a writer or a journalist?  I was at the journalism career fair in my final semester of graduate school, trying to figure out where I wanted to take my career once my masters was complete, and longtime journalist Rob Hiaasen was there with the Capital Gazette.  We talked about the tension I felt around how I approached storytelling, having been shaped by activism before entering journalism, and Rob’s simple question made me realize that it was OK to not fit in ..read more

Queer Parenting and Sex Education

By Meredith Worthen My daughter was born just a year after the conservative red state where we live passed marriage equality. My partner and I were elated that she was going to grow up with the opportunity to marry whomever she wants (or of course, not marry anyone if she doesn’t want to). But as she got older, we realized that they ways we were talking with her about issues like relationships, marriage, etc. were in line with the practices of “queer parenting.” Like I’ve stated elsewhere, in my view, queer parenting is an approach to raising young humans that engages with their own unique s ..read more
