The opening two rounds of the 2020 Downhill UCI MTB World Cup in Maribor, Slovenia wasn’t the one the Australians were hoping for over the weekend. The opening round more cold and wet weather gripping the already battered hillside of Pohorje, but the rain eased up as as the stopwatches came out and conditions looked like a fairly level playing field with it staying slick yet sticky for most of the field. Australia’s downhill riders have put the mud and slop they encountered at the UCI Mountain BIke World Championships in Leogang Austria behind them and focused their attention on back to back World Cups in Maribor, Slovenia this weekend.  The likes of  Troy Brosnan, Jack Moir, who both finished inside the top 10 in elite men, along with Kye A’Hern, Mick Hannah and junior Luke Meier-Smith are enjoying the drier conditions. Cuthbert Awarded SHOF Scholarship

Australian Under 23 Cross Country Mountain Bike champion Zoe Cuthbert has been awarded a scholarship as part of this year’s Sport Australia Hall of Fame Scholarship & Mentoring Program.  The program is supported by Australian Government funding from Sport Australia and the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) and has grown from offering five Scholarships since it began in 2006 to offering a total of 32 funded Scholarships in 2021. Despite the atrocious conditions the Australian downhillers still proved they are some of the best in the world with three riders finishing inside the top 10 on the final day of the 2020 UCI Mountain Bike World Championships. With rain falling overnight, the track conditions were vastly different than during the qualifying round, and the brutal track caught out many medal contenders. Rebecca McConnell has claimed back to back world championship bronze medals at the 2020 UCI Mercedes Benz World Championships in Leogang, Austria. The Australian champion worked her way into second place after the start loop chasing world champion Pauline Ferrand Prèvot  who pulled away from the competition quickly, holding an advantage of a minute going into the second lap. Four Australian downhillers qualified in the top ten ahead of Sunday’s finals at the 2020 UCI Mercedes Benz Mountain Bike World Championships in Leogang, Austria on Saturday. Tracey Hannah (AUS) finished two seconds behind home town favourite  Val Holl who stopped the clock at 4:35:662. Rebecca McConnell showed she was in form ahead of the this weeks UCI Mercedes-Benz World Championships in Leogang, Austria after the final World Cup race on the weekend. Having competed in four races in six days, the Australian champion claimed a podium finish in fourth, her second top 10 result at the Nové Mesto course. It was a mixed bag of results for Australian cross-country riders at the first round of the UCI Mercedes Mountain Bike World Cup in Nové Mesto, Czech Republic early Wednesday morning.
